When in Doubt on
Social Security
A shipyard worker, Kenneth
Matteson, died in October, 1944,
leaving a widow, Jeanette, and
two minor children, one 14 and
the other 16. He had been work
ing for the 17 months before his
death and had six quarters of
coverage. Jeanette and the chil
dren received social security sur
vivor payments because he was
currently incured — that is, he
had been working in six quarters
of the twelve before the month
he died.
When Jeanette called at the
social security district office in
1948 to report that John, the
youngest in he family, was then
18, she was told the benefits
when she became 65, she was
told Kenneth needed 15 quarters
to be fully insured but had had
only six and that no widow’s
benefits could be paid.
Last September, Jeanette read
in her local paper that the social
security law had been changed
so that anyone who died after
June, 1940, and before Septem
ber, 1950, with at least six quar
ters would be considered fully
insured. She called at the social
security office to inquire wheth
er this would affect her and was
told that it would. When she
reached age 65 in January, 1955,
she went back to file her appli
cation for widow’s benefits — in
her case $35.70 per month.
This recent change in the law
allows payments in many cases
to minor children, dependent par
ents, or widows who may not
have been eligible before. If you
believe it may affect you, call at
or write to your nearest social
security office; your local post
master knows where it is located.
Mrs. Matteson believed she would
never get monthly widow’s pay
ments but inquired at a social
security office to make certain.
If she had not, she would not be
receiving the monthly check she
now gets.

BEETLE KILLS
TREES IN
SOUTH GEORGIA
County agent George A. Loyd
this week described the Ips beetle
as a tiny, blackish, hard-shelled
insect only about one-eighth to
one-fourth inch long.
But, he added, the damage Mr.
Ips does is all out of proportion
to his size. Ips is the name of the
beetle that has been killing pine
trees during the past two years.
The county agent said the infes
tation reached the epidemic stage
in some places.
South Georgia is one of the
areas where the outbreak is se
vere. A survey in that section
early this year showed that 48,-
000,000 board feet or 67,000 cords
of standing timber had been.kill
ed by insects. “This does not in
clude the large volume of timber
killed and salvaged since June,
1954, when the killing was first
noticed,” the county agent stated.
Describing how the beetle
works, Loyd said hundreds of
them attack a tree at the same
time. Sometimes they start in the
crown, sometimes in the trunk,
sometimes from bottom to top.
The county agent explained
that the beetle bqres through the
bark. “W hen it reaches the
wood,” he continued, “it bores
tunnels between the bark and
the wood, up and down the tree.
As it bores, it lays eggs about
one-sixteenth inch apart along
each side of the tunnel. These
eggs hatch into cream-colored
worms which bore their own
tunnels—out from the beetle’s
tunnel. After a few weeks, these
worms stop feeding, rest for a
while, then turn into beetles
themselves. They leave that tree
to look for others to start the cy
cle again.”
A cycle takes only about six
weeks, and there may be four to
six of them during the year. “If
things are right for the beetle,”
Loyd explained, “every tree at
tacked and killed breeds up en
ough beetles to attack at least
five more trees.”
The couny agent said the most
important thing in dealing with
Ips is to get rid of the timber in
which the beetle is breeding or
may breed. He added that his of
fice can supply a list of steps to
follow in combating the insect,
and invited landowners to come
by to pick up a set of the recom
mendations.

Blackshear's Mayor Brooker
Welcomes Growers to Market
Progress Marks
First 6 Months
Os Administration
A cordial welcome to Black
shear during the 1955 tobacco
auction season is extended to
tobacco growers, warehousemen
and buyers by Blackshear’s May
or H. M. Brooker.
Progress and city improve
ments have marked the first six
months of city administration un
der the leadership of Mayor
Brooker and the civic-minded
men serving on the City Council.
Mayor Brooker, a native of Na
hunta, had four year of experi
ence in city government before
being elected to serve as mayor
for the 1955 term of office. He
served on the City Council with
streets and lanes department and
cemetery Department Committee
assignments.
During his administration the
City of Blackshear has purchased
a new fire truck at the cost of
$8,395.00, including the fire fight
ing apparatus, greatly adding fire
protection to Blackshear citizens.
An additional sign of progress
was the installation of a new
$4,275 standby water pump which
will assure Blackshear of an ade
quate water supply at all times,
even if there should be trouble
with the older pump. The new
pump will also be used to pump
water to the new swimming pool.
Mayor Brooker said that reno
vation of the City apartments
was one of the projects expected
to be completed next.
He served from 1927 to 1936 in
the First Calvary of the U. S.
Army and was married to Miss
Rhoda Barnard of Jesup in 1931.
They have two children, Mrs.
Anne Brooker O’Brien, and Bob
bie, age six. Mr. Brooker is own
er and operator of Brooker’s Ga
rage.
Active in all civic and fratern
al interests, the 44-year-old may

THE HALF-WAY MARK
Georgia forests are producing
at only one-half their capacity,
according to Agricultural Exten
sion Service foresters. Poor tim
ber harvesting methods, growing
stock volume continually being
reduced, decreasing naval stores
production, and some counties not
under organized fire protection,
are some of the problems, they
point out.
Peach, apple, pear, and pecan
trees can be used as ornamental
trees if adaptable varieties are
planted. Kept in good condition
they serve a two-fold purpose;
fruit and ornamentals.
