Farming Ranks
High in Danger
From Accidents
CHICAGO — Does crossing a
city street leave you a nervous
wreck? Do you long for the safe
ty of farm life?
Well, you had better think
twice. For the 1955 edition of the
National Safety Council’s statis
tical yearbook, “Accident Facts,”
shows that agriculture ranks a
mong the most dangerous of in
dustries.
Only high hazard occupations
such as construction and mining
surpass the accidental death rate
of farm workers.

Big Losses Shown
In Mercantile Fires
Large-loss mercantile fires are
on the increase. The National Fire
Protection Association in 1954 re
corded 54 such fires, with a toll
of 9 lives lost, 149 injuries and
$23 million worth of property
damaged or destroyed. Compara
ble figures for 1953 showed 29 of
these fires, costing 10 lives and
sl2 million in property.
In 1954, 72 percent of the large
loss mercantile fires originated
when the stores were not open.
This often means delay in dis
covery, which is one of the out
standing causes of serious fires.
Therefore, the National Board of
Fire Underwriters urges owners
and operators of mercantile es
tablishments to take the follow
ing safety precautions:
1. Consult your local fire de
partment about how to guard a
gainst conditions under which a
fire may burn and smolder for
hours, filling the building with
heated gases which in turn heat
up woodwork and other combus
tible material to a point where
only the introduction of addition
al air is needed to make the in
terior of the building a seething
mass of flame.
2. See that all stairways and
elevator shafts in any multi
stoned building are enclosed.
3. Engage a watchman — or,
preferably, install an automatic
fire detecting system which will
transmit an alarm to the fire de
partment, or equip the building
with an automatic sprinkler sys
tem.
GI Training and
Loan Deadlines
Given by Official
World War II veterans in Geor
gia have one year from July 25
in which to complete GI training
and two years in which to apply
for GI loans, they were reminded
this week by John M. Slaton Jr.,
manager of the Georgia regional
office.
July 25, 1956, marks the end
of the education program for all
but a few of the World War II
veterans now in training under
the original GI Bill.

GI training payments to schools
and veterans will stop on that
date even though a veteran may
still have unused training enti
tlement or be in the middle of
a course.
The GI loan program, now at
peak activity, has two more years
to run, coming to an end for
practically all World War II vet
erans on July 25, 1957.
The small group of veterans
exempted from these two dead
lines are those who enlisted or
re-enlisted under the Armed
Forces Voluntary Recruitment
Act between October 6, 1945 and
October 5, 1946. These veterans
have nine years from the end of
their enlistment or re-enlistment
to finish GI training and ten
years to apply for GI loans.
More than 90 percent of the
loans — 3,750,000 — were for the
purchase of homes. Business
loans totalled 220,000 and farm
loans numbered 67,000.
More than 7,800,000 — or half
of all who served in World War
II — received some sort of edu
cation or training under the GI
Bill since 1944.
