POLITICAL
ANNOUNCEMENTS
For Representative
TO THE CITIZENS
OF BRANTLEY COUNTY:
This is to announce my candi
dacy for Representative to serve
in the General Assembly of Geor
gia to fill the un-expired term of
the Honorable William B. Harris
in the Special Election to be held
on October 12, 1955.
I was born in Brantley County,
where I have spent most of my
life, and I sincerely believe that
I know the needs of our County
and its people.
During World War Two I spent
over four years in the armed
forces, and a large part of this
time being overseas with General
Patton’s Third Army. Before en
tering service I was engaged in
the practice of law for a number
of years in Brantley County and
in this vicinity.
Since my separation from the
Armed Forces I have been en
gaged in service and assistance
to veterans and their dependents
in Brantley and adjoining Coun
ties. During the years of 1949
and 1950, I served as your State
Senator from the 3rd. Senatorial
District, during which time I
gained very valuable experience
in the General Assembly, which
will be very helpful in the posi
tion I now seek.
I feel that I am thoroughly
qualified to perform the duties of
this important office, and when
I am elected I promise to serve
the people of Brantley County
to the best of my ability at all
times.
Yours sincerely,
Cecil Roddenberry

Drilling for
Oil Ceases
Near Douglas
DOUGLAS — Georgia’s reward
of SIOO,OOO for the state’s first
commercially producing oil well
still stands, as operations ceased
on a well near here in Coffee
county.
The well, which showed en
couraging oil signs at about 2,000
feet on Sept. 13, was plugged up
after drills had gone down to
4,130 feet. The drill hit a layer
of extremely hard rock at that
level and the results of an elec
trical log test conducted by a
Laurel, Miss., firm brought the
decision to abandon the drilling
Gayle Davis, of the Carpenter
Oil Co., Augusta, expressed a be
lief that oil might yet be found
in Coffee county but said his
company has no immediate plans
for further drilling. He estimated
this operation cost about $30,000.
The owner of the land, Terrell
Thurman, had some consolation
while disappointed by the results.
He was left with a deep well
which may prove the best one
in Coffee county for irrigation.
Cook Issues
Opinions on
Property Tax
In three recent unofficial opin
ions concerning ad valorem
(property) taxes, Attorney Gen
eral Eugene Cook has held:
1. State and County taxes be
come delinquent if not paid by
December 20 of each year, the
date on which tax collectors are
i required by state law to issue
executions against each delin
quent or defaulting taxpayer in
their respective counties.
2. The 10 per cent penalty on
delinquent returns required by
state law applies to countywide
school taxes as well as to state
and county taxes.
3. The State Revenue Commis
sioner derives authority to pro
vide tax receivers and collectors
with schedules for use in valuing
automobiles for taxation under
the state law which requires him
to see that taxes are reasonably
equalized among the counties.
