And, even these figures don’t
tell the whole story. The Davy
Crocketts, Mr. Fay reports, are
doing some cheating. For the
count of their number includes
all t’ people in the United
States with Davy, David or Da

ing their surnames.
But the count of Daniel Boones
includes only those named Daniel
or Daniel with a middle initial.

Progress Report
Cited in Leaflet
Georgia farmers receive over
$131,000,000 annually from the
sale of poultry and eggs, accord
ing to a leaflet written by four
Agricultural Extension Service,
College of Agriculture poultry
men. The authors are Arthur
Gannon, H. W. Bennett, J. R.
Palmer, and James Thaxton. The
poultrymen point out that the
gross income from these products,
including what was used at home,
is estimated at better than $145,-
000,000.
Georgia leads the nation in sev
eral fields of poultry production,
according to the report: more
broilers are grown, more chicks
hatched, and more 4-H’ers are
enrolled in the poultry chick
chain.
“While Georgia, for years, has
been an importer of eggs from
the Middle West, it is fast ap-
proaching a point where it will
not only be supplying its own
needs, but will be exporting eggs
to other states,’’ the poultrymen
say.
Citing a trend away from the
small farm flock toward more
commercial flocks of 1,000 layers
or more, the leaflet points out
that county agents reported there
are over 3,000 commercial lay
ing flocks of 400 hens or more
in 150 counties. “This includes
340 farms in 97 counties that are
using the hen cage method of
producing eggs.” Egg production
per hen has risen from 107 in
1943 to 154 in 1953.
The interest young boys and
girls develop in poultry in their
4-H Club projects is one reason,
the specialists point out, why the
University of Georgia has the
largest enrollment of students
majoring in poultry of any Land-
Grant college in the nation. Last
year, 17,987 boys and girls en
rolled in one or more 4-H Club
poultry projects.
The leaflet, “Georgia Farmers
Receive Over $131,000,000 An
nually From Sale of Poultry and
Eggs,” is being distributed by
county and home demonstration
agents.
We have prospects for a state
average corn yield of 21.5 bush
els per acre, says Ralph Johnson.
Agricultural Extension Service
agronomist. “This will be the
highest average yield and the
largest total state production in
history.”

Campaign to
Stamp Out
Rabies Begun
A recently announced drive to
deliver a death blow to rabies
in Georgia has begun in Wash
ington and Hancock counties and
will spread in the coming weeks
to others in which the infection
is known to exist.
Dr. T. F. Sellers, Director of
the Georgia Department of Pub
lic Health, said that a state-fed
eral vaccination and trapping
project has been launched in
these two counties to decrease
animal wild life so that it will
not support rabies. To be includ
ed are foxes, bobcats, raccoons
and skunks.
Georgia is joining Alabama and
Florida in the project, along with
the sponsorship of the Communi
cable Disease Center of the U. S.
Public Health Service in a $50,-
000 anti-rabies program. The
Center has assigned an additional
veterinarian to each of the three
states to assist with the plan. Dr.
Robert Watson has been assigned
to Georgia. Other agencies tak
ing part in the project are the
State Game and Fish Commis
sion and the Federal Fish and
Wildlife Service.

Health Department.
Counties which will be includ

will follow, since trapping will
be carried out in all counties hav
ing cases of rabies.
“Residents of these counties
should help trap the animals,
whenever possible,” Dr. Starr
said. “I have seen many farmers

Toombs and other counties are
