800 May Die
In Holiday
Car Mishaps
New York - With Christmas and
New Year’s Day both falling on
Sunday this year, the Association
of Casualty and Surety Compan
ies estimated this week that the
two year-end holidays will bring
accidental death to 800 people
on the nation’s streets and high
ways. Another 400 probably will
die in the intervening week,
bringing total traffic deaths for
the holiday season to 1,200.
Thomas N. Boate, manager of
the Association’s Accident Pre
vention Department said that of
ficially both holidays extend
from 6 p. m., Friday until mid
night of the following Monday.
“390 people’’, he said, “will die
over the Christmas week-end and
410 more over the New Year’s
week-end. During that time an
additional 30,000 people will be
injured in traffic accidents.
“Speed and alcohol, separately
or together, will be responsible
for a ‘greater-than-normal’ num
ber of deaths and injuries. Each
will be a contributing factor in
more than one-third of al acci
dents. Other expected causes
in order of their frequency, will
be driving on the wrong side of
the road, reckless driving, fail
ure to yield the right-of-way and
falling asleep at the wheel.
“The Christmas-New-Year sea
son, as a time of happiness and
celebration, usually brings forth
a greater number of parties and
informal get-togethers than any
other time of the year. The party
goer who is over-indulgent is in
line to kill or be killed on the
highway. It should be obvious
by now that the person who
drinks should not drive.
“Similarly, this holiday season
always brings extra traffic and
congestion. When a motorist loses
his temper, or tries to make up
for delays by speeding, it is just
a matter of time until he con
tributes to the traffic toll.
“The fact that more than 30,-
000 American homes will be
touched by sorrow this holiday
season is a sobering thought.
Particularly when a little re
straint and self-control could a
vert the bulk of this useless
highway misfortune.”
Polio Shots
Available To
Age 14 Now
The age priority for Salk polio
vaccinations of Georgia children
has been extended by the Georgia
Department of Public Health to
include those from one through
fourteen years of age.
The primary reason for the
change was the small demand
for vaccine in the state, according
to Dr. John H. Venable, assistant
to the director of the Georgia
Department of Public Health.
The former priority included
children who had reached their
first birthday but not their tenth.
Dr. Venable said that the State
Health Department is making the
immediate change on advice of
the State Advisory Committee on
Polio Vaccine because of ap
proaching expiration dates of
some of the vaccine.
The Committee learned only
this week that priorities could be
modified under special situations.
Although another completed
delivery of Salk vaccine to local
communities by the State Health
Department is scheduled by De
cember 15, Dr. Venable said that
there might be a slight delay af
ter that date before the vaccine
actually is available for use by
local private physicians and
health department clinics.
“Private physicians and health
departments can begin second
shots according to local needs,
provided they adhere to the rec
ommended schedule,” Dr. Vena
ble said. “This calls for intervals
of at least three and preferably
four weeks between the first and
second shots the child receives.”
No provision has yet been
made for the third round of shots,
he said.
SUGGESTION FOR REDUCERS
Trying to reduce? If so, you
should take into account the high
quality protein and fat of whole
milk. Try restricting yourself to
skimmilk or butteimilk for pro
tein and calcium needs. One mea
suring cup of fresh fluid skim
milk or buttermilk gives you 85
calories, while the same amount
of whole milk has 165 calories.

GRANITE CAPITAL iC

Since 1882, when Dr. Nathaniel Long opened Elbert County’s
first commercial quarry, the granite industry has grown to
include 67 granite firms employing 1400 people, 70% of the
county’s non-farm workers. No wonder Elberton, Elbert
County seat, is called Georgia’s Granite city! A large rayon
mill is also situated in Elberton, site of many fine old ante
bellum homes.
In Elbert County and throughout Georgia, the U. S.
Brewers Foundation works constantly to assure the sale of
beer and ale under pleasant, orderly conditions. Believing
that strict law enforcement serves the best interest of the
people of Georgia, the Foundation stresses close cooperation
with the Armed Forces, law enforcement and governing offi
cials in its continuing “self-regulation” program.
