Sheep Industry
Brings SIOO,OOO
To Ga. Farmers
Georgia’s revitalized commerc
ial sheep industry brought SIOO,-
000 to farmers in 1955, records
in the office of R. O. Williams,
Extension animal husbandman at
the College of Agriculture, show.
Figures also reveal a 400 per
cent increase in the Georgia sheep
population during the past 14
months.
According to Pete DeLoach,
Extension sheep specialist, 20,000
Southwestern ewes and 500 Suf
folk and Hampshire rams have
been brought into the state since
October, 1954.
“We expect another big in
crease in numbers this year,” he
said. “A tremendous improvement
in the quality of lambs grown al
so is anticipated.”
The sheep specialist explained
that the majority of the 1955
lamb crop was made up of white
faced lambs of the Southwestern
breeding. “Most lambs will be
sired by the Suffolk and Hamp
shire rams, which wili improve
the quality of the lambs,” he
pointed out.
Williams said that a summary
of the six lamb pools held in
the state last year points up the
importance of improving quality.
Os the 3,851 lambs marketed in
graded lots, 71 prime animals
$23.36 per cwt., or $22.22 per
averaged 95 pounds and brought

head. The average weight of 473
choice lambs dropped to 84
pounds, the price per cwt. to
$21.13, and the value per head
to $17.70.
Os the lambs sold, 1,456 - 38
percent of the total graded good.
Here, the weight was 74 pounds,
the price per cwt. $17.65, and the
value per head $13.05.
Prices received for 1,260 utility
lambs and 591 culls pulled the
price per cwt. on all lambs sold
down to $16.35, and the average
value per lamb to $11.28.
These figures were included in
a report given by Williams on
Jan. 20 at the annual Georgia
Sheep Breeders Association meet
ing at the State 4-H Club Cen
ter, Rock Eagle Park.
