THOMSON, Ga. — A large
gathering of sportsmen from all
over the state attending the Lit
tle River Valley Wild Life Fed
eration’s third annual meeting,
just held in Thomson, heard
Gov. Marvin Griffin describe
Georgia’s game and fish industry
as a great natural resource; one
that adds substantial sums to the
income of Georgians each year
and attracts many visitors to the
state.
“Each year several million dol
lars come into the trade channels
of our merchants, businessmen
and others from the sportsmen
who come here to enjoy the
matchless fishing and hunting
we can provide,”he said.
“The Little River Valley Wild
Life Federation is setting a good
example for the sports lovers in
other parts of the state. This
group came into formation as a
direct result of the construction
of the Clark Hill Dam on the
Savannah River.
“When this dam was complet
ed it backed its waters up into
the tributaries in this part of the
state forming numerous lakes
which are available to fishermen.
The Federation was named for
one of the streams that feed the
reservoir, and it now has more
than 5,000 members in ten clubs
in the district.”
The Governor said the State
Game and Fish Department has
fostered the organization of fish
ing and hunting clubs through
out Georgia and “is doing an ex
cellent job” in providing fish
from its hatcheries for stocking
lakes and streams.
“In recent years several big
dams have been completed and
at the present time some others
are under construction,” Griffin
continued, “Among those finished
are dams at Clark Hill, Buford
and Allatoona. Another big dam
recently was completed near Mil
ledgeville, while the Jim Wood
ruff Dam on the Georgia-Florida
line is about finished. New con
struction is planned at Hartwell
and Fort Gaines.
“As a result of the construc
tion of fish ponds by our farm
ers and the building of the dams
on the rivers, Georgia now ranks
