north, parallel to the present
road. Otherwise known as Federal
Aid Project F-085-1 (2) in Brant

The minimum wage to be paid
under this contract shall be the
amounts set out in the Labor
Provisions included in the Propo
sal The attention of bidders is
directed to the Special Provisions
covering employment of labor,
methods of construction, sublet
ting or assigning the contract and
to the use of domestic materials.
Plans and specifications are on
file at the office of the under
signed at Atlanta, and at Savan
nah, Georgia, and at the office of
the Board of County Commis
sioners of Brantley County at Na
hunta, Georgia, where they may
be inspected free of charge. Cop
ies of the plans may be obtained
upon payment in advance of the
sum of $13.00. Copies of the Gen
eral Specifications may be ob
tained upon payment in advance
of the sum of $3.00, which sums
will not be refunded.
Proposals must be submitted on
regular forms, which will be sup
plied by the undersigned, and
may be obtained by a payment, in
advance of $5.00 for each pro
posal issued. When the proposal is
submitted, it must be accompan
ied by a certified check, cashier’s
check, negotiatable United States
Bonds, or other acceptable secur
ity in the amount of $3000.00, and
must be plainly marked “Proposal
for Rqad Construction,” County
and Number, and show the time
of opening as advertised. Check
of the low bidder will be cashed
and all other checks will be re
turned as soon as the contract is
awarded, unless it is deemed ad
visable by the State Highway De
partment to hold one or more
checks. If an unusual condition
arises, the State Highway Depart
ment reserves the right to cash
all checks. Bidders Bond will not
be accepted. Bond will be re
quired of the successful bidder as
required by law.

administratrax of the estate of
the late A. J. B. SHUMAN, has
filed her petition for discharge as
such administratrix, as provided
by Chap. 113., section 2301, of the
current Code of this State. All

term, 1956 of my Court why such
discharge should not be granted.

WHEREAS, heretofore, on De
rember 16, 1950, J. F. Larkins
did execute to Mrs. Nicie M. Bur
gess (Mrs. J. T. Burgess) and N.
M. Gibson, a certain security deed
to certain property described as
follows, to wit:
All that tract or parcel of land
lying and being in the City of Ho
boken, Brantley County, Ga., and
in Land Lots Number Two Hun
dred Twenty-one and Two Hun
dred Forty in the Ninth Land
District of Brantley County,
Georgia, containing Eighteen (18)
acres, more or less, and bounded
as follows; North by lands of
Banner Thomas; East by lands of
Banner Thomas, N. W. Parrish
and a street; South by right of
way of Atlantic Coast Line Rail
road Company, lands of K. S.
Varn & Co., and lands of J. M.
Jones; and West by lands of K. S.

J. F. Larkins did execute to the

by said note and the interest
thereon would become due on
May 2nd, 1956, and said note is
now matured, in default and un
paid, and
WHEREAS, on Oct. 21, 1953 J.
F. Larkins did execute to the un
dersigned a second security deed
on the property herein described
to secure a note for $2016.94;
principal and,
WHEREAS, it was agreed bet
ween J. F. Larkins, and the un
dersigned by the agreement en
tered into on May 2nd 1955, that
said note would become due and
payable on May 2nd, 1956, and
that said note and the interest
thereon is now mature, due and
unpaid, and,
WHEREAS, by said agreement
entered into on May 2nd, 1955,
the said J. F. Larkins became in
debted to the undersigned, in the
further sum of $2080.00 principal
amount, which sum is evidenced
by the promissory note of the
said J. F. Larkins and in favor of
the undersigned, due May 2nd,
1956, it being agreed that said
note was secured by the provis
ions of the two deeds to secure
debt herein mentioned and de
scribed, and
WHEREAS, said note is now
mature, due and in default both
as to principal and interest.
Now, THEREFORE, according
to the original terms of said se
curity deeds and the laws in such
.cases made and provided, the un
dersigned will expose for sale to
the highest and best bidder for
cash the above described proper
ty, after proper advertisement,
on the first Tuesday in August
1956, between the legal hours of
sale before the courthouse door
in Nahunta, Brantley County,
Georgia. The proceeds from said
sale will be used to the payment
of said notes, principal, interest
and expenses, and to other in
debtedness of the said J. F. Lar
kins to the undersigned secured
by said security deeds, and the
balance, if any, delivered to the
said J. F. Larkins.

Water Pollution Bill Signed
Into Law by the President
The Chamber of Commerce was informed this week
by telephone from the office of Congressman Blatnik in
Washington that President Eisenhower signed into law
the water pollution control bill (S-890) ,on Monday,
July 9.
Signing of the bill ended a long
but successful fight both inside
and oustide of Congress to win
approval of the legislation. The
bill, also known as the Blatnik
bill, extends and strengthens the
present Federal Water Pollution
Control Act.
The pollution bill was first
passed in the Senate and sent
to the House where it was re
written by Congressman Blatnik
of Minnesota, assisted by Mrs.
Iris Blitch, Bth District Congress
woman.
The House version of the bill
carried federal funds for alloca
tion to smaller cities for the
building of sewerage disposal
plants.
Considerable effort was made in
the House to delete this fund
from the bill. Effort by the local
Chamber of Commerce and Con
servation League helped to pre
vent the fund provision from be
ing taken out of the bill. The
measure passed the House, 213-
165.
It was then sent to a con
ference committee of Senate and
House members where S-890
and HR-9540 could be consoli
dated. While the bill was in con
ference, the administration made
every effort to get the annual
SSO million appropriation out of
the bill. Effort from South Geor
gia was a factor in helping to
prevent this from happening.
When the bill was finally sent
to the President, signature was
held up for several days and
again the Chamber of Commerce
and Conservation Laegue went
into action to urge the President’s
approval.
Delay in the President’s office
also caused the funds for the
bill to be left out of the budget
approved on July 6. However,
every effort is being made to get
the Senate to include funds for
this bill in their regular approp
riation.
The amount of money to be
allocated in Georgia for the next
ten years is $1,131,450 per year
for sewerage disposal plants. Sev
eral weeks will be required to
iron out details so that cities may
apply for the funds.
A recent survey made by the
Agricultural Extension Service
shows that daughters of artific
ially-bred dams averaged 806
pounds of milk and 21 pounds
of butterfat more than theirs
dams. Dairy marketing special
ists estimate that this means a
net profit per heifer per lacta
tion on a one-year basis of $41.36

Due to the fact that I must
be away at a teacher’s conference
all of next week, the canning
plant will be open on Saturday
July 14 and 21 instead of Tues
day 17 and Thursday 19.
Execpt for this change, the
schedule will remain on Tuesday
and Thursday until the season
closes.

J. H. “Tommy” Thompson,
Georgia chairman of the nation
wide “Slow Down and Live”
campaign has asked all motorists
to remember the facts about
automobile speed.
“Speed is the number one
highway killer.” Mr. Thompson
said. “While other factors cer
tainly enter the accident picture
the fact remains that auto speed
killed 12,700 people in 1955.
Speed injured some 715 thou
sand others.”
Mr. Thompson pointed out
that according to the AAA text
book, “Sportsmanlike Driving,”
if a car with good brakes is
traveling 25 miles per hour on a
dry concrete surface and the
reaction time of the driver is
average, it will take a little over
60 feet for the car to stop after
danger has been sighted by the
driver.
Under the same conditions if
the car travels 60 miles per hour
it takes over 272 feet to stop
after sighting danger.
“It’s simple,” he said. “The
faster you’re traveling, the long
er it takes you to stop. Some
times it takes so long that you
can’t avoid hitting another car
or a child who has dashed into
the street.
