His distinguished record as a public servant
shows his experience and ability, and the high es
teem which has marked his career.
Andrew J. Tuten’s personal and civic qualifica
tions are notable. He was born and reared on a farm
in Pierce County, Georgia. He attended the Public
Schools of Pierce County and later graduated from
the Georgia Normal College and Business Institute
at Douglas, Georgia.
He received an L.L.B. Degree from Mercer Uni
versity School of Law in 1917. He Volunteered for
Service in the U. S. Navy in 1918 and received an
Honorable Discharge from that Service to his Coun
try.
He married Miss Ruth Roberts and has two daughters: Mrs.
Buck Brinson and Mrs. L. Perry Hyde.
He has been a member of the First Baptist Church for forty
years and a Deacon for many years.
He was the First President of First Baptist Brotherhood of
Alma.

At Street Dance
M. E. Thompson, candidate for
the U. S. Senate seat now held
by Sen. Walter F. George, spoke
last Wednesday night in Black
shear at a street dance held on
Main street. His opponent in the
race, former Governor Herman E.
Talmadge, was speaking at a
Chamber of Commerce banquet
at the same time in Blackshear.
A large crowd was in attend
ance at the street dance and
heard Thompson’s speech, with
little display of reaction either
for or against the candidate.

He was appointed February 21st as Solicitor General of the Waycross Judicial
Circuit which appointment terminates January 1, 1957. He is doing an excellent
job as Solicitor General.

State Revenue Department and The State Highway Depart
ment.

ured passage of bill authorizing $728,500 for
water conservation and fire protection in and
around the Okefenokee Swamp. Will save mil
lions of dollars in timber and restore fish and
wildlife.
TOBACCO—Came to the rescue of the tobacco
farmer in 1955 and 1956 when market prices
were lagging.
WATER POLLUTION—Led in passage of the
bill from her Committee to protect rivers and
streams from dangerous and poisonous pollu
tion.
SMALL WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT—
Wrote and introduced the bill providing for
government grants and loans for small water
shed projects which would conserve water for
farmers, cities, industry, recreation, and con
servation of fish and wildlife.
OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS— Scored other
achievements in: Rural Electrification; Vete
rans Assistance; Public Housing; Altamaha
Development: ReActivating Valdosta Weather
Station; Large appropriations for Glynco and
Moody Air Bases.
