Beverage alcohol creates many
problems. Here is a brief sur
vey of some of these problems:
THE BUSINESS PROBLEM
In American industry more
than one billion dollars is lost
annually because of alcoholism.
Wage losses alone are $432 mil
lion, a yeaT. And last year 118
million accidents were due to al
cohol. Os these 10,000 were fa
tal.
It was Henry Ford who said,
“No one wants any drinking man
to be at the mercy of machinery
and no one wants to be at the
mercy of machinery in the hands
of a drinking man.”
Someone has said. “Never yet
have we seen a fellow who could
keep himself and his business
both liquid at the same time.”
THE INSANITY PROBLEM
Reports of the Public Health
Service on first admissions to
state and private hospitals for
the .insane show that first admis
sions due to alcohol psychosis or
alcoholism have been increasing
until about one in seven cases is
due to alcohol.
THE HEALTH PROBLEM
Alcoholism is the number four
health problem. Alcoholism is
more than just a “moral weak
ness”. It is alcohol psychosis
which is considered by most doc
tors as a disease which the pat
ient has developed by drinking.
Alcohol addiction is ten per cent
more prevalent than tuberculosis,
fifty per cent more prevalent
than cancer and two hundred and
twenty five per cent more prev
alent than poliomyelitis.
THE CRIME PROBLEM
In a recent year half of the'
arrests reported to the FBI were
related to drinking. Out of 1,689,-
555 total arrest reported from
1,389 cities, 59.2 per cent were
for the offense of drunkeness,
disorderly conduct, driving while
intoxicated, and liquor law viola
tions.
In a study of the drinking pat
terne of various crminals, Dr.
Lloyd M. Shupe, Director of the
Crime Laboratory of the Colum
bus, Ohio Police Department, dis
covered these interesting, results.
In the commission of crimes of
passion about half had been
drinking. In the commission of
crimes of violence these results
were shown. Os those arrested for
murder 83 per cent had been
drinking. Os those arrested for
shooting 82 per cent had been
drinking. In ttje commission of
crimes of cutting, carrying con
cealed weapons, and other as
saults 92 per cent had been
