County ASC Committee Are
Elected for Ensuing Year
The Delegates to the ASC Co
unty Convention, who are S. B.
Highsmith, J. W. Eldridge, Louis
Thrift, J. B. Carter, and L. E.
Dickerson, met Thursday, Sept.
27, and elected the County Com
mittee to serve during the next
calendar year.
Their term of office begins Oc
tober 1, it was announced by
Dan H. Jacobs, County Office
manager.
The following persons were el
ected to serve on the commit
tee: George Dykes, Chairman;
Neil W. Hendrix, Vice-Chairman
and Owen Prescott, member.
The County Committee, sub
ject to directions and supervision
of the State ASC Committee and
acting through Community Com
mitteemen and other personnel,
are responsible for carrying out
the Agricultural Conservation
Program, Price Support Program,
Acreage Allotment Program, Soil
Bank Program and other pro
grams assigned to it by the Con
gress or Secretary of Agricul
ture.
All committeemen are farm
ers. Mr. Dykes operates a farm
in the Nahunta Community on
which he does general farming.
He grows com, tobacco, pasture,
etc., using cover crops to build
and conserve the soil. Mr. Dykes
was among the first farmers in
the county to grow crotalaria,
which is especially adapted to the
soils in this county.
Mr. Hendrix operates a farm
in the Hickox community and Mr.
Owen Prescott in the Hoboken
Community.
The following persons were el
ected as community committee
men in the communities listed be
low in the elections held Septem
ber 10 through 21. Their term
of office will begin October 1,
1956 and continue until October

week while her parents, Dr. and
Mrs. Ivey Jacobs are attending a
medical meeting in Tennessee.

Mrs. Wade Colvin has return
ed after an extended visit with
her daughter, Mrs. Latt Tyre in
Augusta.
Funeral services for Mrs. D. D.
Dowling were held on Tuesday
afternoon at the Hoboken Bap
tist Church. Mrs. Dowling is
survived by three sons and one
daughter, Mrs. O. U. Davis of
Hoboken.
Airman Terrell Hickox who is
stationed with the U. S. A. F. in
Bangor,Maine, is home on leave
this week, visiting his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hickox.

the serious illness of Mr. Lloyd
Gunter who is a patient at the
Memorial Hospital in Waycross
where he underwent surgery this
week.

Rosa Mae Altman, was injured in
an accident last Saturday when
a car collided with the tractor he
was driving. He was trated at
Pierce County Hospital and then
returned to the home of his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Riley
Altman. .
Miss Shirley Griffin who was
critically hurt in an auto acci
dent last week remains in a ser
ious condition in the Memorial
Hospital in Waycross.
Mt. Zion Advent
Christian Church
Revival Announced
Revival services will begin at
the Mt. Zion Advent Christian
Church at Ray bon Monday, Oct.
8, with Rev. Willie Hagin as the
evangelist, it is announced by
Kenneth Willis, church clerk.
Rev. Mr. Hagin was formerly
of Brantley County and is known
as a good, consecrated minister
of the Gospel.
Services will be held each
night at 7:30 o’clock. Everyone
is invited to attend.
Homecoming Day, with dinner
on the church grounds, will be
held Sundday, Oct. 14.

The Third District annual fall
conference of the Georgia Con
gress of Parents and Teachers
will be held in the Patterson
High School Auditorium Satur
day, Oct. 13, at 10:00 A. M.
Registration begins at 9:30
o’clock A. M. Lunch will be ser
ved in the school cafeteria for
sl-25 by the Patterson FHA girls.
Members are asked to notify Mrs.
Oswell Smith in Patterson, by
Thursday, Oct. 11, how many to
expect from each local unit.
There are 46 local units of the
congress from nine counties in
the district including Appling,
Bacon, Brantley, Camden, Char
lton, Glynn, Pierce, Ware, and
Wayne.
The purpose of the conference
is to give information and in
spiration.
Officers from the State Depart
ment of Education will be parti
cipating on the program.

Enrollment Reaches 511
The Nahunta Elementary
School got off to a good start
with a registration of 511 for the
first month.

that they are in a new set-up
with the building painted and
running water in every room.

on Sept. 25, weighing 8 lbs. and
2oz. in a Jacksonville hospital.
He has been named J. C. Herrin,
Jr., (Jerry). Mr. and Mrs. Herrin
are formerly of Brantley County,
but are now living in Jackson
ville.

Club Meeting
The Library Club of Nahunta
High School held their first meet
ing recently, in the High School
Library. Miss Mary Lou Gibson
is supervisor of the club.

Mrs. Rhoda Dowling
Passed Away Sunday
Mrs. Rhoda Ann Dowling, 78,
died at her home in Hoboken
Sunday after an extended ill
ness. She had resided at Ho
boken all of her life. She had
been a member of the Hoboken
Baptist Church for the past 20
years.
Surviving are one daughter,
Mrs. O. U. Davis of Hoboken;
three sons, Thomas A. Dowling,
of Baldwin, Fla., D. E. Dowling
of Waycross and T.-Sgt. W. E.
Dowling, U. S. Marines, Okinawa;
five sisters, Mrs. Clifford Griffin
of Waycross, Mrs. A. J. Thomas
of Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Nora Stew

Bethlehem Cemetery
Will Be Cleaned
Bethlehem Cemetery will be
cleaned off next Wednesday, Oct.
10, it is announced by W. E.
Johns.
All people who are interested
in the Bethlehem Cemetery are
requested to come next Wednes
day and bring tools for cleaning
off the burial grounds.

P.T..A. held their regular month
ly meeting Tuesday, Oct. 2, at
the schoolhouse.
Virgil Allen, president, was in
charge of the meeting. A large
number of parents and teachers
attended.
Mrs. O. S. Barr was in charge
of the program which was put on
by her school students.
The members discussed plans
for playground improvements
and more equipment. Plans were
also made to hold a Halloween
Carnival Oct. 26.
The patrons of the school are
urged to attend the PTA meet
ings and help with plans for a
better school.
Refreshments were served af
ter the business meeting.

hunta. Mr. Hiller will be here
until Oct. 18, when he will go
to Charleston, S. C., where he
is being transferred. Mrs. Hiller
and Dawn will remain with her
parents for a while.

The First Baptist Church of
Nahunta held its annual Installa
tion of officers and teachers,
Sunday night, Sept. 30, it is an
nounced by the pastor, Rev. Cecil
F.. Thomas.
Rev. Lester Edgy led the or
dination service in which Earl
W. May was ordained as a new
deacon, and all the board of dea
cons and the pastor took part.
The pastor led the dedication
service in which 91 officers and
teachers stood before a large con
gregation and were installed to
lead the church for the year 1956-
57.
Those included were general

Union leaders, Woman’s Mission
ary Union officers, and the lead
