Negro Members
Raising Funds
For 4-H Center
DUBLIN — Georgia’s 53,082
Negro 4-H Club members are go
ing t° make sure they have some
thing to be thankful for this
Thanksgiving day.
They’ve set out to give 25
cents a piece and build a cottage
at their 4-H Club Center here.
Alexander Hurse, state Negro
4-H Club agent who announced
the plan, said the boys and girls
want to speed construction on the
project themselves. But more
than that, he added, they think
people who are able to give much
more than a quarter will be a lot
more interested in giving it
when they see that Negro 4-H’ers
are boosting the project too.
The deadline for the 4-H mem
bers’ campaign is November 16.
There will be a roll call of coun
ties, at that time, last day of the
annual State Negro 4-H Congress,
and a representative of each
county will present .the quarters
and make his report.
Officers of the State Negro 4-H
Council and other leaders don’t
like to think about the possibility
of maybe not reaching their goal
by November 16.
“But if they don’t,” Hurse said,
“we’ll extend the deadline to
December 25 and let the cottage
be a Christmas present.”
Leaves, hay straw or sawdust
used as a mulch has proved suc
cessful in holding moisture and
keeping down weeds.

Religiously Speaking
By Rev. Howard D. Blalock, Pastor
Emmanuel Baptist Church, Blackshear
hanged On his
OWN GALLOWS
There is an interesting story
in the book of Esther about a man
by the name of Haman. He is
known as the man who built a
gallows for someone else and was
hanged on it himself.
It is an old story. It is a tragic
story. Too, it is a story that is
being reacted every day.
The Associated Press sometime
ago reminded us that there are
still Hamans today. It reported
the story from Big Store Gap,
Virginia, of how the body of Mrs.
Julia Lane, 35, was found en
tangled in a fence which she and
her husband, Ballard Lane, had
electrified with no volts to keep
boys out of their tomatoes. Killed
by her own electric fence.
We have a principle here that
is extremely important. It is this:
Anything evil which we carry
in our minds against others is
bound to have a bad effect on
ourselves.”
It is true of hatred. The late
Fulton Oursler wrote of a wom
an who faced an operation for
ulcers. When the Doctor told her
that she had ulcers, he discover
ed that she had developed them
because she harbored a resent
ment for her husband because he
wouldn’t buy her a fur coat. Os
course, they paid for a fur coat,
but they didn’t get it.
The “Baptist Observer” says:
“When we hate our enemies, we
give them power over us—power
over our sleep, our appetites, our
blood pressure, our health, and
our happiness. Our hatred is not
hurting our enemies at all; it
only turns our own days and
nights into a hellish turmoil.”
E. Santley Jones says: “A rat
tlesnake, if cornered, will be
come so angry it will bite itself.
That is exactly what the harbor
ing hate and resentment against
others is—a biting of oneself. We
think we are harming others in
holding these spites and hates,
but the deeper harm is to our
selves.” Hoses Ballou is right
when he says that hatred is just
self-punishment.
Exclusiveness is another evil
which, if we carry in our lives
against others, is bound to have
a bad effect on ourselves. Ex
clusiveness is truly an electri
fied fence. When we wall other
people out of our lives, we wall
our own selves in. Bars are not
the only things which .make a pri
son; the wall of exclusiveness
does of a certainly. And if we
continue to stay in this prison
we will starve of spiritual mal
nutrition.
There is quite a contrast be
tween the Sea of Galilee and that
sea called Dead. The Sea of Gali
lee tingles with life around her
borders and on her soil there
grow trees, weeds, and willows.
Beneath her waters live fish, and
because of their abundance men
make a living thereby.
But to the south the sea called
Dead is really, for her soils are
barren, her waters salt, and there
is no life in or ground the sea.
The reason for this is that the
Sea of Galilee gives—it gives the
river of Jordan—and the Dead
Sea takes—it takes the river of
Jordan. There are no outlets.
This is like so many people’s
lives. They have no outlets. They
take all they can get and then
wall themselves with an exclu
siveness which eventually des
troys. Those who give really live,
those who take and then wall
themselves up are really dead.
Throttle and
Bottle Deadly
On Highways
CHICAGO — “A loaded gun
is no more dangerous than a
half;loaded driver.” Ned H. Dear
born, president of the National
Safety Council, asserted today.
“For one thing, the driver isn’t
recognized as alethal weapon.”
Mr. Dearborn, appealing to
civic organizations and enforce
ment officials to “Back the Att
ack” against traffic accidents,
pointed out that drinking drive
rs and drinking pedestrians are
more prevalent during the Chri
stmas holidays than at any other
time of the year.
Because of the emergency tra
ffic situation, with its risingtoll,
Mr. Dearborn said a year-round
“Back the Attack on Traffic Ac
cidents” campaign is being laun
ched this December and will con
tinue throughout 1957.
The purpose of the campaign
is, first, to encourage public of
ficials to step up the attack and,
second, to stimulate citizens to
back the attack on traffic ac
cidents.
The December emphasis will be
on drinking drivers and pedest
rians, night driving, speed, and
pedestrian hazards.
The throttle and the bottle
were the big reasons why a rec
ord 609 persons were killed in
traffic accidents last Christmas,
according to a study made by the
National Safety Council.
Drinking drivers were involved
in 55 per cent of the fatal mis
haps, although normally they are
involved on around 20 per cent,
the study showed. Speed was a
factor in 85 per cent, compared
with an annual average of 35 per
cent.
The .most common driver action
contributing to fatal accidents
was driving on the wrong side
of the road or in the center of
the road. Failure to observe a
signal or stop sign was second.
Mechanical failure or tire blow
outs were responsible for only
four of the fatal accidents studied.
One-third of the pedestrian
victims were crossing between
intersections, stepping from be
hind a parked car or walking on
a roadway.
