Religiously Speaking
By Rev. Howard D. Blalock, Pastor
Emmanuel Baptist Church, Blackshear
TIME
The story is told that once the
animals were complaining that
humans were always taking
things away from them. “They
take my milk,” griped the cow.
“They take my eggs from me,”
said the hen. “From me they get
bacon and other meat,” com
mented the hog. “They hunt me
for the sake of my oil,” mourned
the whale.
Soon it was the snail’s turn
to speak. He smiled and said: “I
have something they would like
to have—more than anything else.
Something they would certainly
take away from me if they could.
You see, I have TIME!”
Time has become an important
factor in the life of modern man.
He has a clock in every room,
on every street, in his mind and
on his nerves. Man’s pursuit of
time is causing him his most seri
ous difficulties.
The “Present Truth Messenger”
points out the tragedy of letting
ourselves be hounded by time.
‘Two men once lost their lives
in this manner. One of them be
came angry with the other, and,
removing the pendulum from a
big clock, used it as a weapon
with which he beat the life out
of his companion. The murderer
then took poison and so the two
passed on. A philosopher com
menting on the tragedy said:
‘What a shame to make violent
use of that pendulum! Give it
time, and it would have killed
both men peacefully and decent
ly’.”
If we think of time as being
our opponent in a race, or as our
bitter enemy—something we must
outrun and outwit on every hand
—we can rest assured that time
will be the victor. Just what is
time and how are we to deal with
it?
The writer of Ecclesiastes was a
pessimist. However, we must not
let this fact cause us to lose sight
of the more important thing about
the Preacher. He was first of all
a teacher of wisdom and a prac
tical philosopher. He once wrote
some significant words about
time. He said;
“Everything has its appointed
hour.
There is a time for all things
under heaven:
a time for birth, a time for
death,
a time to plant and a time to
uproot,
a time to kill, a time to heal,
a time to break down and a
time to build,
Another rabid fox has been killed in Pierce county.
Artie Boyett of Mershon sent*in the fox head for examina
tion and it was found positive.
a time to cry, a time to laugh,
a time to mourn, a time to
dance,
a time to scatter and a time
to gather,
a time to embrace, a time td re
frain,
a time to seek, a time to lose,
a time to keep, a time to throw
away,
a time to tear, a time to sew,
a time for silence and a time
for speech,
a time for love, a time for hate,
a time for war, a time for
peace.”
—Ecclesiastes 33:1-8
Much could be said about these
words of the Preacher. It is evi
dent that he has discovered that
everything has its appointed hour.
In fourteen contrasts that em
brace the whole of human ex
istence he shows that everything
has its time. But the Preacher’s
most important discovery is that
everything is timed by an eternal
law which is above time, and that
we should set our watches by this
time. If God is keeping the time,
then our timing is a secondary
matter. The most important thing
about time is not, as most men
think, that it tells us when to get
up, work, eat, talk, and go to
bed. The important think about
time is the realization that it
does not return nor repeat itself.
It moves forward. Each moment
says that the eternal is at hand.
And as Dr. Paul Tillich says: “The
significance of every moment of
time is this: in it we decide, and
are decided about, with respect
to our eternal future.”
The tragedy of time is this:
that before most people realize
that times is the stuff from which
eternity is made, they have com
mitted suicide with a clock pen
dulum.
