Public Service Commission
Okays Power Company's Sale
The Georgia Power Company’s
application to purchase the pro
perties of the Georgia Power and
Light Company has been ap
proved by the Georgia Public
Service Commission, John J. Mc-
Donough, executive vice presi
denet of the Georgia ower Com
pany, announced.
The Commision granted the
Georgia Power Company auth
ority to borrow sll million in
short-term bank loans to help
finance the purchase and to as
sume the bonded indebtedness of
the Georgia Power and Light
Company amounting to $7,705,000.
The action followed a hearing by

Brantley Enterprise, Nahunta, Ga., Thursday, Dec. 20, 1956
the Commission at its offices in
Atlanta on December 3. The Com-
mission’s order is conditioned
upon the approval of the Federal
Power Commission and the Sec
urities and Exchange Commission.
According to a statement by
the Commission accompanying
the order, “Ellis Arnall appeared
as special counsel for the Geor
gia Electric Membership Corpora
tion. Mr. Arnall stated that the
Georgia Electric Membership
Corporation is wholeheartedly in
support of the proposed acquisi
tion of Georgia Power and Light
Company by the Georgia Power
Company.” Mr. Arnall, the Com
mission reported, read corres
pondence from D. M. Pollock,
president of the Georgia Electric
Membership Corporation, in
which the GEMC expressed its
approval of the Georgia Power
Company’s application.
There are six rural coopera
tives in the area now served by
the Georgia Power and Light
Company.
According to the Commission,
“The Georgia Power and Light
Company purchases most of its
power from its parent company,
the Florida Power Corporation.
Production costs of electricity
are higher in Florida because of
fuel prices. It will be necessary
for the Georgia Power Company
to continue the purchase of this
relatively high-cost power until
generating facilities now under
construction are completed.”
In view of these conditions, the
Commission authorized the Geor
gia Power Company to maintain
the electriq rates of the Georgia
Power and Light Company for
at least three years following the
purchase of that company. After
that time, the rates are to be
made uniform with those applied
to other customers of the Geor
gia Power Company. Based on
present rate levels, this would
mean a reduction to all classes of
customers in the area now served
by the Georgia Power and Light
Company.
