Roddenberry Acts to Complete
Record in Neil Roberson Case
Judge Cecil Roddenberry has
called a hearing to have the re
cord completed on indictments
in Pierce and Ware counties
pending against Cornelius (Neil)
Roberson, who is currently serv
ing sentences totaling 30 years
for assault with intent to murder
and burglary in Pierce county.
The hearing wiii be held this
Saturday, Dec. 22, at 11:00 A.M.
in the judge’s chambers in the
Bunn building in Waycross.
Judge Roddenberry has ordered
the clerks of Superior Court in
Pierce and Ware counties to turn
in to him all indictments against
Roberson by 11:00 A. M. Satur
day.
Two burglary indictments are
pending against Roberson in
Pierce county, one for burglary
of the R. W. Highsmith home in
Blackshear, and the other for
burglary of the business establi-

shment of A. E. Davis.
Roberson entered pleas of
guilty in Pierce County Superior
Court in June of 1952 to assault
with intent to murder State
Trooper P. O. Temple and to
burglary of the Sunset School in
Pierce county.
He received a maximum 20-
year sentence on the burglary
charge and a maximum sentence
of 10 years for the shooting of
Trooper Temple.
Roberson is serving his sent
ences at present in the state peni
tentiary at Reidsville.
The sheriff of Ware county has
been ordered to transport Rob
erson from Reidsville to Way
cross for the hearing Saturday.
In his order to the Superior
Court clerks of the two counties,
Judge Roddenberry said the
hearing was set to complete the
record on the indictments against
Roberson.
Funeral Services
Held Monday for
Mrs. Mercer, 71
Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah
Jane Douglas Mercer, 71, who
died in the Pierce County Hospi
tal Sunday, December 16, were
held Monday morning at High
Bluff Primitive Baptist Church in
Brantley county, with burial in
the church cemetery.
Mrs. Mercer died of injuries
received in an automobile colli
sion four miles south of here on
State Highway 121. She was a
passenger in the car of Wiley
Elbert Johns of Nahunta and died
30 minutes after being rushed to
the hospital.
Mrs. Mercer a native of Pierce
county, had lived in Brantley
most of her life and was the wife
of Elder Dempsey Mercer, Primi
tive Baptist Minister.
In addition to her husband, she
is survived by a daughter, Mrs.
Dolly Clark, Waycross; one son,
J. H. Mercer, Waycross; and two
brothers, Jim Douglas, Hoboken,
and John Douglas, Waycross.
Darling Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
