Polio Drive in
Brantley Nets
$1438 Funds
The 1947 campaign for funds
for polio brought a total of
$1,438.45 in Brantley County, ac
cording to Prof, Cleve Jones of
Hoboken, director of the drive.
Funds for polio “March of
Dimes” raised by various organ
izations in the county, as an
nounced by Prof. Jones, were as
follows: .

Arthur Hartwig is in the
Veterans Hospital at Dublin. He
underwent an operation for the
amputation of a leg on Friday,
Feb. 8. His condition is reported
as fair.

Mrs. Emmett J. Paige announ
ces the engagement of her daugh
ter, Josephine, to Thomas Ronald
Willis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil
liam B. Willis of Nahunta.
Miss Paige graduated from
Henry Grady High School and
the Georgia Baptist School of
Nursing in Atlanta. She is pre
sently employed as a staff nurse
at Georgia Baptist Hospital.
Mr. Willis graduated from
Nahunta High School, and is a
junior at the Georgia State Col
lege.
The wedding is to take place
March 16th in the Chapel of
I Peachtree Christian Church, Atl
anta.

Nahunta Boys
To Defend
Championship
Boys and Girls
Teams of 5 Schools
Will Compete
The eastern division Class B
basketball tournament will be
held at Nahunta Feb. 19 through
Feb. 21, it is announced by Prof.
Earl May, principal of the Na
hunta High School.
Basketball teams of five high
school in the eastern part of the
Eighth District will compete at
Nahunta. Both boys teams and
girls will be represented in the
tournament which begins Tues
day night, Feb. 19, at seven
o’clock.
Both Nahunta teams meet the
Wacona squads Tuesday night,
the girls playing at 8:15 and the
boys at 9:30. The first game Tues
day night. will be between the
Folkston and Camden county girls
teams at 7:00.
The Nahunta boys team is be
lieved to have a good chance to
win the tournament but Coach
Harold Scott is taking nothing
for granted as his team must first
defeat Wacona Tuesday, manage
to get by the Folkston team
Wednesday night, then on Thurs
day overcome the winner of the
Patterson-Camden County con
test.
TheNafrunta girls, if they win
from Wacona Tuesday night, will
not play again until Thursday
night, when they would meet
the winner of the Folkston-
Camden County-Patterson fra
cases.
Referees for the tournament
will be Junior Harrison and
Robert Nabors. Score keeper will
be Jack Moore, time keeper
Dudley Spell and announcer
Auvell Raulerson.
The winners of the eastern
division tournament will meet the
winners of the western division
tdurnament in play-offs for the
Eighth District Class B champion
ship.'
The winners of the district
tournament will then compete in
the State B tournament for the
state crown.
The Nahunta High School boys
team won the district champion
ship last year and went to the
semi-finals in the state tourna
ment when they were defeated
by Perry, the team that won the
state Class B championship.
Oak Grove Wesleyan
Church Revival and
Homecoming Day
The Oak Grove Wesleyan Meth
odist Church will start a revival
meeting Friday night, Feb. 14,
and also hold a homecoming rally
Sunday, Feb. 17, it is announced.
Rev. Alexander is pastor of the
church. The homecoming pro
gram will last all day Sunday,
with dinner served on the church
grounds at noon.
The public is invited to attend
the revival services Friday, Sat
urday and Sunday, and also the
homecoming program.
Drivers Licenses
To Be Validated
Troopers of the State Patrol
will be in Nahunta for the pur
pose of renewing auto drivers
licenses through the validating
machine on the following dates:

During the school year ending
June, 1956, more than 62,000
schools took part in the Special
Milk Program—a gain of more
than 50 percent over the previous
year, says John Conner, dairy
marketing specalist, Agricultural
Extension Service.

Iris Barr to Sing
On College Band
Concert Program
Miss Iris Barr of Nahunta, who
is a senior at Georgia State Col
lege for Women at Milledgeville,
will sing two numbers at the
Milledgeville Concert Band Pro
gram Wednesday night, Feb. 20,
at 8:30.
Miss Barr is majoring in music
education. She is president of the
college government association.
Last summer she was a member
of the cast of the Municipal
Theater Under the Stars in Atl
anta.
Miss Barr will accompany the
Concert Band on a tour of Middle
Georgia towns where they will
give a program of instrumental
and vocal music.
They will be at Georgia Mili
tary Academy Thursday, Feb. 21,
also at Sparta, Sandersville and
Wadley on Friday, Feb. 22.

High School has been named
Homemaker of Tomorrow because
she received the highest score
in a written examination on
homemaking knowledge and atti
tudes taken by the senior girls.

nah were married Saturday night,
Feb. 9 at the home of Mrs. Julia
Gibson at Waynesville with
Judge Gibson performing the
ceremony. ,
The young couple left immedi
ately after the ceremony for
Savannah where they are both
employed.

Nahunta Wins From Camden,
Jesup and Hinesville Teams
Nahunta High won three dou
bleheaders in a row by defeating
Camden and Jesup last week and
Hinesville Tuesday. The local
teams have but one more contest
before ending their regular sea
son play, that being with Darien
Friday night in Darien. The girls
record now stands at 14 won and
13 lost, while the boys have a 19
won, 8 lost record.
Last week the Nahunta girls
defeated Camden 56-49, and
Jesup 58-47. In the Camden game
Velma Lee King had 28 points,
Jane Strickland 16, and Nancy
Hendrix 12. In the Jesup game
Strickland had 25, King 22, Hen
drix 11. Tuesday night the local
lassies was victorious over Hines
ville 49-36. Strickland had 20,
King 18, and Hendrix 11.
The Nahunta boys dropped
Camden 73-37, and Jesup 66-45.
In the Camden game, Griffin had
21, Allen 17, Johns 10, Cleland 9,
Brooker 4, Royster 4, Dubose 2,
Thomas 2, Rooks 2. Against Jesup
Allen had 29, Griffin and Brook

Barney Harris, 38,
Os Hoboken Passes
Barney Harris, 38, of Hoboken,
died Saturday in a Waycross
hospital after a short illness. A
native of Brantley county, he was
a veteran of World War 11. He
was employed by the Brant’ y
County Road Commission.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Mildred Griffin Harris, three
sons, James, Testy, and Thomas
Harris, i all of* Hoboken; two
daughters, Shirley Ann and Ellen
Louise Harris, both of Hoboken;
one sister, Mrs. Felix Highsmith
of Jacksonville; three half sisters,
Mrs. Ellis Highsmith, and Mrs.
Jessie Griffin, both of Nahunta
and Mrs. A. J. Taylor of New
York; two half brothers, Roscoe
Johns and Ira Johns, of Nahunta;
and his mother, Mrs. Nicie Johns
of Nahunta.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at the graveside in
Hickox cemetery.
