ARE YOU A
SCATTERBRAIN?
I got a new point of view
regarding “scatterbrain” the
other day. All of us have »ur
viewpoints. For example, “A
family stops before a shop win
dow filled with women’s apparel.
The wife sees the beautiful
dresses and knows the kind of
material they are fashioned from;
the husband sees the price tags;
and the little son sees the wax
dummies.”
I always thought of “scatter
brain” as a criticism. However,
Dr. Halford Luccock says “There
are two kinds of scatterbrains.
There are together, they do not
sed clearly; they do not move in
logical order from cause to effect.
“Second, there is a good kind
of scatterbrain, that person who
scatters his brains’ about so they
are a real help to other people.
Thus, Louis Pasteur scattered his
brains all over the earth. His
discovery of the germ theory of
disease won at such costly effort
to himself, has blessed the earth.
So, also, a good teacher ‘scatters
his brains’ into many lives so
that people are finer and stronger
than they would have been with
out him.” (Samuel B. Gould says
this of a teacher: “Yes, a teacher
is a person with a touch of im
mortality, and he should be the
most envied men. His profession
should be the most sought after,
the most carefully prepared for,
the most universally recognized.
And as America grows in mental
and cultural stature,’ it will be.”)

St. Marys Kraft Corporation
gested a list of the REALLY
best-dressed women, all of which
can be called “scatterbrains.” The
list is as follows: 1) The Nun. 2)
The Nurse. 3) The Salvation
Army Lassie. 4) The Military
Service-women. 5) The Teacher.
6) The Policewoman. 7) The Red
Cross Gal. 8) The Social Service
Lady.
Gerald Kennedy tells us of a
scatterbrain. It is Kathryn Lawes,
the first wife of Sing Sing Pri
son’s famous Warden Lewis E.
Lawes. Kennedy tells how, for
seventeen years, she walked
among the condemned of society
helping them in the many ways
she could. “Sullen, resentful faces
lighted up as she walked by.
Was 10298 worried about his
family? Did young and bewilder
ed 23804 feel that the steel door
had cut off his life? Simply,
without affectation which they
would have detected in a second,
she found out and silently, quick
ly helped. She took— not sent—
food and clothes and money to a
family left desolate by the hus
band’s imprisonment. She saw to
it that encouraging letters went
to hopeless criminals, Many, many
dollars found their way from her
purse to the pockets of newly re
leased men, frightened to face
freedom again.”
Adrian Anderson says that for
two decades that great French
artist Renoir suffered pain ahd
misery. Rheumatism racked fiis
body and distorted nis fingers. As
he painted beads of perspiration
stood on his brpw from the int
ense suffering. Matisse, nis dis
ciple, pleaded one day, “Why
tdrture yourself to do more?”
Gazing at *a * favorite canvas,
Renoir replied, “The pain passes,
St. Marys, Georgia
but the beauty remains.” Just a
scatterbrain!
Maybe you have exclaimed
with others: “I will not be a
doormat for anybody. I will not
lie down and let anyone run over
me.” Two thousand years ago a
man said: “I am the way.”
People have been climbing up
over Him onto the heights ever
since.
Are you a “scatterbrain?” By
that I mean a person who “scat
ters his brains” about so that
they are a real help to other
people.
