Warning Given
Os Downy Mildew
In Melon Crops
Information has been received
at the Georgia Coastal Plain Ex
periment Station that the downy
mildew of watermelons, cucum
bers, and cantaloupes was found
considerably north of Leesburg,
Florida, earlv last week.
The rain which was general
over this part of the country last
week was out of the South and
it is probable that some of the
downy mildew spores .may have
been carried as far north as Geor-

disease in Georgia fields. Infec
tion by this disease early in the
season could be disastrous for
the farmers growing watermelons
and other cucurbit crops. The
plant disease specialists at the
Experiment Station at Tifton urge
the farmers to be prepared to
combat this threat to their crops.
The use of Zineb as a spray
or as a dust is recommended. Use
2 pounds per 100 gallons of spray
or a 6% Zineb dust. Tribasic cop
per is also effective in controlling
this disease by using 3 pounds of
this material per 100 gallons of
spray or a 6Ms percent copper
dust. Farmers should begin apply
ing one of these materials im
mediately as a preventive ins
urance measure.
Tommy Walton, state 4-H Club
leader, states that 19,699 local
adult volunteer 4-H> leaders gave
of their time and talents to help
4-H members in 1956.

Cecil Forrest Thomas, Jr. will
receive his Bachelor of Science
Degree in health • and physical
education from Georgia Teachers
College during the graduation
exercises on Monday, June 3. He
is the son of Rev. and Mrs. Cecil
F. Thomas of Nahunta.

driver with the 550th Antiarcraft
Artillery Battalion’s Headquart
ers Battery at Fort Story, Va.
Highsmith entered the Army in
January of this year and com
pleted basic training at Fort Jack
son, S. C.

home in Okeechobee, Fla., after

County with relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Lewis
had as their guests Mrs. Cora
Burch and Mrs. Willie Fink, two
sisters of Mr. Lewis. They are
from Cocoa and Tampa, Fla. Mr.
and Mr*. Lewis gave a dinner
Sunday in honor of their guests,
which was attended by a number
of their friends and relatives.

Bobby Eugene Crawford and
Billy Franklin Stone both of
Route 2, Waycress, left last week
for Jacksonville, Fla. where they
were inducted, as volunteer, in
the U.S. Army.

Focus Week
Activities
The week of May 12 through
May 17 was observed as Focus
week by both the Intermediate
and Junior Girls Auxiliary of the
Nahunta Baptist Church under
the direction of Miss Malva Alice
Keen.
During the week both groups
went to Folkston on Thursday
night to an Association G. A.
Rally.
Those from Nahunta taking
part on the program were Sandra
Williams, singing a solo accom
panied by Ann Thomas at the
piano.
The group enjoyed a supper at
the church on Friday night.
