“THOSE WHO CAN COMMAND THEMSELVES, COMMAND
OTHERS ’’
Leadership, or the ability to command others, is a quality
which rightly begins with the individual. Although the majority
of us harbor no great desire to command others, it is quite
necessary to exercises leadership over our own destiny unless
our existence it to be a willy-nilly life of worry and vacillation.
It is surprising how many people in the world have little
command over their own emotions. It is surprising, too, how many
people lead fretful and worrisome lives because they lack either
the will or the courage to make and enforce decisions which are
actually nothing but workday problems which confront them
regularly.
Although, as we said, the majority of us do not necessarily
seek to command others, it is most important that we take com
mand of ourselves. For it is this command which will benefit us
in terms of stability, self control and a greater peace of mind.

JOEL CHANDLER
HARRIS, APPRENTICE
Joel Chandler Harris began his
newspaper career as a printers’
apprentice on what was probably
the only newspaper ever pub
lished on a Southern plantation.
At Turnwold Plantation, eight
miles east of Eatonton on the
Phoenix Road, Harris lived and
worked on “The Countryman”, a
weekly paper edited and pub
lished by Joseph Addison Turner,
plantation owner.
The Putnam County farm youth,
in need of money to help his
family, went to work on the
paper in 1862 setting type. Mr.
Turner, planter, lawyer, scholar
and writer, encouraged his youth
ful apprentice in writing and
allowed him free use of the ex
tensive plantation library, con
sidered one of the best in the
area.
The boy Harris spent much
time in the slave quarters where
he heard the African animal
legends and the Negro folklore
of the old South which he im
mortalized in his “Uncle Remus”
stories.
“The Countryman” was forced
to suspend publication later in
the War Between the States and
young Harris went to Forsyth
where he began work on “The
Advertiser” there.
Turnwold Plantation is now
the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. B.
Dunn.
Because wireworms can move
rapidly through soil, they may
severely damage plants, even in
a field that has been fumigated
for nematodes, says C. R. Jordan,
entomologist, Agricultural Ex
tension Service.
