TO GEORGIA COUNTIES
Wilkinson County
RICH IN \
MINERAIS
Wilkinson, one of the older Georgia counties, is rich in min**
era! resources. Its principal mining product is kaolin, a type
of day used in plastics, paints, adhesives and rubber prod
ucts. In addition, kaolin is used throughout the world as a
filler and surface coating pigment for paper. Several mining
companies extract kaolin from the rich land of Wilkinson
County. These mining interests plus timber interests—lum
ber mills and allied woodworking operations—make
Wilkinson a thriving, industrious part of the state. Irwinton
is the county seat and Gordon is the county’s largest town
being the center of its industry and expansion.
In thriving Wilkinson County and throughout Georgia, the
United States Brewers Foundation works constantly to assure
the sale of beer and ale under pleasant, orderly conditions.
Believing that strict law enforcement serves the best interest
of the people of Georgia, the Foundation stresses close coop
eration with the Armed Forces, law enforcement and govern
ing officials in its continuing "self-regulation” program.

Baptist Village
Day Is Slated
Sunday, June 16
Building of the first units of
“Baptist Village,” homes for re
tired people located at Waycross,
is progressing rapidly.
This report was made today
by Rev. Harvey R. Mitchell, ad
ministrator of the big Georgia
Baptist project which will even
tually cost three million dollars.
Baptist Village is designed to
provide for 300 residents with
complete care including a health
center when finished.
The state Convention has set
June 16 as “Baptist Village Day,”
a Sunday on which the 2,819
Baptist churches of Georgia will
voluntarily seek to reach an
offering goal ot $125,000. This
money will be used to help those
older citizens who need financial
aid.
Baptist Village is non-profit
and was conceived solely for ser
vice to the aged, regardless of
their denominational affiliation.
Foundations and corporations, as
well as individuals, may find
Baptist Village a very worthy
investment for some of their
funds. All gifts to Baptist Village
are deductible from income tax.
Plans for this new agency of
the Georgia Baptist Convention
were made under the close super
vision of experts in the field of
geriatrics. All laws and codes
governing the planning and con
struction have been carefully
observed.
•The cost of the first units with
out furnishings will be $238,500.
Officials are planning for formal
dedication services in November
with an adjourned session of the
State Convention being held at
Baptist Village.
A number of Georgia’s out
standing preachers and laymen
comprise the board of trustees
with Dr. Dick Hall, Jr., pastor
of the First Baptist Church of
Decatur, as chairman.
Coastal Bremuda
Acreage Growing
Fast in Georgia
Georgia is well on the way
toward its goal of a million acres
of Coastal Bermuda grass by
1965, an Agricultural Extension
Service agronomist reported this
week.
J. R. Johnson, University of
Georgia College of Agriculture,
said a recent survey by county
agents shows that a half million
acres of Georgia land are now
growing Coastal Bermuda. “This
is 21 times as much Coastal as
the state had in 1950,” he de
clared.
“At the present time,” Johnson
continued, “950,000 acres are in
common Bermuda grass. Since
Coastal will produce about twice
as much, common Bermuda is no
longer recommended.”
If the one-million-acre goal is
reached in 1965, it will mean that
Georgia will have about two
million acres of Bermuda grass.
Both Coastal and common grow
during the summer when tem
peratures are higher.

Negro Killed
Thursday by
Falling tree
A Wayne county Negro was
killed instantly last Thursday,
June 6, near Patterson, when a
tree, which was being cut for
saw logs, fell on the tractor he
was driving.
He was identified as Arthur
Lee Shorts, of Broadhurst, who
was working with a crew of
workers cutting and loading logs
for lumber, near Patterson.
One witness stated that the
victim was driving the tractor
and failed to hear the other
workers shout the usual “timber”
warning as the tree was about
to fall.
The body of the Negro man
was removed to Selma, Ala., for
burial, where he was originally
located. He was 25 years old, and
had just recently moved to
Broadhurst, in Wayne county.
Sheriff J. H. Pittman investi
gated the accident.
