“THE WORLD IS SO FULL OF A NUMBER OF THINGS, I’M
SURE WE SHOULD ALL BE AS HAPPY AS KINGS ”
These words by Stevenson, despite a sly tongue-in-cheek
flavor, apply, certainly, to the majority of us. The world is truly
a wondrous place, peopled with wondrous creatures and full of
a number of things designed to make our lives a happy event.
Unfortunately, however, some of us have become so intense in
ouf scramble for the big things that we have lost awareness of
the multitude of small blessings which are so near at hand, yet
miles away from our consciousness.
The magnificence of the setting sun, the gentle tracery of a
single leaf are things of exquisite beauty; a particular brand of
beauty which never bears a price tag. Oh, the world is so full
of a number of things; a friendly “hello”, the laughter of chil
dren, the magic greenness of summer, and the warm bond of
friendships. They are all commonplace; so much a part of our
workaday existence that we have all but forgotten them in our
hustle toward bigger things; the small, the everyday, the taken
for-granted, can help to make us all happy as kings.

BIRDS OF PREY
HAWKS are more useful to mankind than some of us
think. Although they are classified as birds of prey,
their prey, in most cases, are pests.
Birds of prey have taken abuse from
man. So much, in fact, that many species
are quite scarce today. Many states have
passed regulations to protect them but
six—Georgia, Arkansas, Maryland, New
Mexico, Oklahoma and Virginia—do not
have laws against shooting hawks.
In thumbing through a national
magazine the other day, I ran across
a chart showing the foodstuff eaten
by some of our native hawks. Only
f de v9k ■; 1
Fuiton lotou two, the Cooper’s Hawk and the
Sharp-shinned, have a questionable diet. While most
species feed on insects and mice, these two rarely have
anything but small birds on their menu.
The Cooper’s hawk, frequently known to attack young
quail and sometimes rabbits, feeds on insects, poultry, game
birds, rats and mice and songbirds. Os its entire diet, fifty
five per cent is made up of small birds. Twelve per cent
is game birds.
The Sharp-shinned feeds almost entirely on small birds.
Os its entire diet, ninety -six and four-tenths per cent are
small birds. Rats compose two and six-tenths per cent and
the remainder is miscellaneous foodstuffs.
Although these two species destroy more birds than
rodents and pests, they are not game birds. They eat small
birds that must have their population controlled by some
force of nature, a force that is essenital in holding down
populations within reasonable bounds.

Minor Species Less Harmful
Several minor species, such as the rough-legged hawk,
the redtailed and the sparrow hawk, rid the world of sev
eral types of insects and mice.
The rough-legged, for example, chooses his food from
rats and mice, of which he feeds almost entirely, rabbits
and squirrels, insects, game birds, aquatic animals and
frogs and snakes.
Os their entire diet, rats and mice are the most com
monly found, composing seventy-two per cent of its food
stuff. Game birds average around four and three-tenths
per cent and insects six and a half per cent.
Naturalists have found that the game birds and
rabbits that hawks attack are usually the weaker and
slower of their family, the ones that would have a hard
time surviving anyway.
Birds of prey play their role in Mother Nature’s
community, ridding it of these crippled, slow or imma
ture species that cannot protect themselves.
Regardless of how you feel about hawks, it is hard not
to admire them for their courage, strength, speed of flight
and keen eyesight.

The Navy has a new “flying

Not only is the YFPIO the
