These words by Elbert Hubbard are sharp barbs aimed not
only at the more lethargic souls in our midst, but at the selfish
and the self-centered.
It is economically unwise, of course, to consistently work ten
hours for eight hours pay, but we don’t think that Mr. Hubbard’s
idea of pay must be measured strictly in terms of dollars and
cents.
There are many occasions when we have the opportunity to do
just a shade more than is expected of us. We may do that little
“extra” out of a feeling of duty, or friendship, or justice. More
often than not, our efforts are appreciated and acknowledged,
but even if they are not, our pay can be measured in the satis
faction we gain by knowing that we have done the right thing.
It’s true, of course, that this sort of payment can’t be banked, but
it is a bonus in the sense that we will not have a conscience to
be nagged by thoughts of what we might have done, or shduld
have done, but didn’t.
