“TO HAVE WHAT WE WANT IS RICHES: TO BE ABLE
TO DO WITHOUT IS POWER. . . .”
Many of us now and then engage in a bit of fanciful thought
of riches in a material sense. We are probably too practical to
dwell to a harmful degree on these desires, although some of us
do and, as a result, are victims of our own misdirected ambitions.
By and large, however, we have the knack of rationalizing our
position and making the most of what we have. This ability to
do without .may sometimes be lack of initiative, but, as a rule, it
• is a healthy safety valve which can very sensibly be considered
as power.
It is true that circumstances place most of us in the position
of power in the sense that we are doing without. However, it is
not the act of simply doing, without which can be termed as
power, but, rather, the manner in which we mentally accept and
live within our position. It is a good thing for all concerned
that the large majority of us are certain, though not necessarily
quick, to realize that we can all be possessed of riches with : n
our specific means; for riches, after all, are a relative quantity.
