Actual Damage
By Insects Set
At $100,000,000
Lost; One Hundred Million
Dollars.
That is the title of a leaflet
written by Dr. C. R. Jordan, Ag
ricultural Extension Service en
tomologist, and it represents, too,
the amount of money insect da
mage causes Georgian to lose
every year.
But the outlook is not all
gloomy, Jordan points out. “The
future for insect pests in Georgia
is not bright. New insecticides,
new information, and more and
more assistance being given far
mers by county and home dem
onstration agents are a. few of
the weapons being used against
insects.”
Calling attention to Insect Con
trol Week in Georgia, August 19-
24, the University of Georgia Col
lege of Agriculture specialist said
insects ar ethe farmer’s greatest
competitor. “Insects cost the far
mer money every time they da
mage crops, livestock, forests,
buildings, and stored products.”
In an attempt to reduce the
tremendous damage, the Exten
sion Service, through its county
and home deirfonstration agents,
carries on an extensive program
aimed at more effective and eco
nomical insect control. Training
meetings, are held, publications
and films distributed, informa
tion on insect outbreaks and ap
propriate control measures are
widely disseminated — all in an
effort to promote better insect
control programs on the farm
and in the home. •
Last year, Jordan reported,
county agents assisted 405,513
persons with the problems of in
sect control. This represents a
92.3 percent increase over the
number assisted in 1952.
“In the past, Georgia farmers
have lost the equivalent of 330,-
000 acres of cotton to insect da
mage — an average loss of about
$33,000,000 annually,” Jordan
said. “The Extension Service,
through its county agents, .is
spearheading a continuous drive
to reduce this tremendous loss to
cotton insects.”

1,000 farmers, leaders, and others
were trained. “The ability to
make these counts is essential if
a farmer is to conduct an effec
tive and economical cotton in
sect control program,” the ento
mologist stated. “As a direct re
sult of this training, a number
of farmers used insecticides to
greater advantage and increased
their yields.”
Another phase of the work con
ducted by the Extension Service
in an effort to cut the losses
suffered from insect damage is
the insect survey program. It is
compiled each week on all major
crops — the work handled by
Extension Entomologist W. C.
Johnson. The report is released
to county agents along with rec-
