Events in Arkansas Part of
'Conspiracy' Says Vandiver
Lieutenant Governor S. Ernest Vandiver declared
Thursday in Blackshear that recent events in Little Rock,
Ark., are part of a “conspiracy to utterly and completely
destroy’’ harmony between the races in the South.
“The Constitution of the Unit
ed States has been violated, bro
ken and ignored,” he told the
Blackshear Lions Club, “and pre
cedents are being set which will
be used against you and me.”
The lieutenant governor of
Georgia spoke to approximately
100 persons at a Lions Club meet
ing in the Grady Street School
lunchroom, including about 30
Lions Club members and 65 to
70 visitors.
Vandiver said that Georgians
must fight for a return to con
stitutional government in this
country and for the fundamental
principles on which this nation

Freedoms Retained
“The sovereign states of this
union banned together 170 years
ago,” Vandiver said, “and drew
up a constitution. Certain free
doms were guaranteed to the
people. The states were sovereign
and the framers of the constitu
tion insisted that certain powers
be withheld to the states.
“For 167 years, the right to
operate our own schools was re
served to the states. But in its
infamous decision of May 17,
1954, the Supreme Court took
the power to make law, a power
they did not legally have.”
Vandiver termed the Supreme
Court’s school integration deci
sion “a political decision by a
political court.”
The lieutenant governor, who
had just returned from the
Southern governors conference at
Sea Island, Ga., said events in
recent days have shocked our
people. “The constitution,” he
declared, “has been utterly and
completely disregarded.”
Must Fight for Rights
The South’s plea for help from
other sections in the integration
issue must be based on the con
stitution, Vandiver urged. “We
must fight for constitutional go
vernment at the naional, state
and local levels by electing men
to office who believe in the fun
damental freedoms for which our
forefathers fought.”
The lieutenant governor was
introduced by Lee Broome, a
member of the Lions Club and
editor of The Blackshear Times.
Blackshear’s acting mayor, Aub
rey Geiger, first vice president of
the club, presided in the absence
of President E. F. Rudderman.
The Lions and their guests en
joyed a delicious chicekn supper
served by the ladies of the Grady
Street School lunchroom staff.
The meeting was opened with
prayer by O. W. Raulerson.
The lieutenant governor was ac
companied by Sergeant Ben Garr
of the Georgia State Patrol.

Eason Christmas
Home Destroyed
By Fire Thursday
The home of Mr. and Mrs.
Eason Christmas on Route 1,
Waycross, in Pierce county was
destroyed by fire last Thursday,
Sept. 26.
The fire apparently started in
the kitchen of the home and was
out of control before it was
spotted. Only a small amount of
furniture was saved, most of the
contents of the house being a
total loss.
BERRY-PRODUCING PLANTS
Frequent pruning is the key
to success with berry-producing
plants such as hollies. Any heavy
pruning should be done during
the winter. Cutting out the tips
of new growth will create more
compact growth and also .make
it unnecessary to do too much
heavy pruning during the win
ter. This information is from
Gerald Smith, horticulturist, Ag
ricultural Extension Service.
