Glynn Academy Band to Give
Concert at Nahunta School
Nahunta School
Band Sponsors
Free Program
The Nahunta High School
band will sponsor a concert to
be given by the Glynn Academy
band of Brunswick Monday
night, Oct. 14, at the Nahunta
gymnasium, it is announced by
Prof. Kelly, the band leader.
The Nahunta High School PTA
will also hold a meeting in con
junction with the concert Mon
day night. There will be no ad
mission charge and everyone is
invited.

Preparations
Being Made to
Serve 10,000
The free barbecue dinner to be
served next Wednesday in con
nection with The Brantley Com
pany’s centennial celebration will
be the biggest serving of food to
the largest crowd in Pierce coun
ty history.
Barbecue plates will be served
beginning at 12:00 noon between
the livestock market in Black
shear and the swimming pool
area.
The barbecue pork is being
prepared by four community
groups in Pierce county. Barbe
cue and potato salad to serve
2,000 persons is being prepared
by people in the Rehobeth com
munity. A group from the Wal
kerville Community Center is
preparing for 2,000 plates and
the Blackshear Lions Club will
prepare for 2,000. Nesbert Tho
mas, mayor of Patterson, and a
group from that area will supply
barbecue for 4,000 persons.
In all, approximately 8,000
pounds of pork are being barbe
cued and a ton and a quarter of
potatoes will go into the salad.
Approximately 1,000 loaves of
bread will be used.
And it’s all FREE—a part of
The Brantley Company’s 100th
Anniversary celebration.
Largest Crowd
In History of
Town Expected
The crowd of more than
10,000 people expected next
Wednesday for The Brantley
Company celebration will be
largest ever to have assembled
in Blackshear.
During tobacco seasons, at
political speakings and other
such events, large crowds
have gathered in Blackshear—
but none so large as the one
likely to be here October 16.

day, Oct. 16, The Brantley Com
pany’s 100th Anniversary pro
gram will be held in the Brant
ley Warehouse, according to
President Leo J. Allen.
Mr. Enoch Smith of Gaines
ville, Georgia, spent the week
end with his mother, Mrs. Mamie
Smith.

Car Leaves Road,
Two Women Hurt
Two Pierce county women were
injured late Saturday when the
car in which they were riding
left the road on Highway 38
near Blackshear and ran into a
ditch.
Mrs. Minnie Proctor and Mrs.
Cora Lee Tillman were treated
at the Pierce County Hospital
following the accident which oc
curred about 5:00 o’clock Satur
day afternoon.
A 1954 Chevrolet driven by
Alfred C. Amerson of Mascot,
Fla., went out of control and left
the road, injuring the two wo
men when it came to a halt in
the ditch. The only other occu
pant of the car was the son of
Mrs. Proctor, J. C. Proctor, who
was not injured.
Amerson was charged with
driving under the influence of
intoxicants, according to Sheriff
J. H. Pittman, who investigated
the wreck.
Raybon Church
To Hold Revival
Revival services at the Church
of God of Prophecy at Raybon
will begin Sunday night, October
13. Services will be held each
evening at 7:30 p.m. Will con
tinue for two weeks.
Rev. J. C. Spence of Jesup will
be the evangelistic speaker. Rev.
Stafford Robertson is pastor.
Musicians will be present to
provide special music and there
will be good singing. The public
is given a cordial invitation to
attend.

QUANTICO, Va. — Graduated
from a six-week Naval Reserve
Officer Training Corps course
Sept. 7 at Suantico, Va., was
Midshipman Emile A. Barnard,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Rennis L.
Barnard of Waynesville, Ga., and
a student at the University of
Notre Dame.
The summer training stressed
leadership, tactical control of in
fantry units and physical condi
tioning.
Upon graduation from college
he will be eligible for a commis
sion as a second lieutenant in
the Marine Corps.
Tommy Wainright
Died Friday Night
Tommy Wainright, 52, of Hick
ox, died Friday night.
Mr. Wainright was a life-long
resident of Hickox and attended
the Hickox schools. He was the
son of the late James Irwin
Wainright.
Survivors include his mother,'
Mrs. Lillie Ida Wainright, Black
shear; four sisters, Mrs. Mary
Wells, Jesup, Mrs. Peon Lake,
Nahunta, Mrs. Julie Johnson,
Jacksonville, and J. Harvey
Wainright, Waycross, and seve
ral nieces and nephews.

riage of Miss Joy Clemmie Alma
Pyle of Edmonton, Alberta, Can
ada, to Mr. Alfred Herrin on
Aug. 28 at Collingswood Presby
terian Church, Toledo, Ohio.
Mr. Herrin is a son of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph M. Herrin of Na
hunta, Ga. He is a graduate of
Nahunta High School and Geor
gia Institute of Technology.

Mr. and Mrs. Dean Broome of
Blackshear announce the birth of
a daughter on Saturday, October
5, at the Pierce County Hospital.
The baby weighed eight and one
half pounds. She has been named
Amelia Janet.

of Police
Dies in Wreck
CLAXTON, Ga. Oct. 9 — Je
sup Police Chief Clarence E.
Sizemore and a New Jersey cou
ple were killed this afternoon in
a three-car smash-up on U. S.
301 about six miles south of here.
Chief Sizemore’s wife, Mrs.
Thelma Sizemore, was critically
injured in the wreck which took
place about 4:30 pm.
In addition to the Jesup offi
cer, reported Trooper Romie Wa
ters of the Reidsville State Pat
rol station, the fatalities were
Marshall Nettles, 57, and his
wife, Mrs. Hattie Nettles, about
55. Their home is Carteret, N. J.
The driver of one of the cars
involved in the crash, Mrs. Ger
trude Billington, 31, of Miami,
Fla., escaped injury.
Trooper Waters said Chief
Sizemore, 51, and a former Au
gusta police officer, was driving
south behind Mrs. Billington
when Mrs. Billington slowed
down for a truck ahead of her.
Chief Sizemore applied his
brakes, Waters continued, and
his car went into a skid, struck
the Billington car and swerved
head-on into a vehicle driven by
Nettles.
Mrs. Sizemore, 47, was taken
to the Bulloch County Hospital,
where her condition tonight was
listed as critical.
The cars driven by Nettles and
Sizemore were demolished, Wat
ers said. No charges were placed
against Mrs. Billington.
Chief Sizemore had assumed
his duties as head of the Jesup
police force on Sept. 15.

The Riverside Home Demon
stration Club met at the home of
Mrs. M. M. Manning on Friday
afternoon, Sept. 27. Miss Sara
Simpson demonstrated the var
ious ways to use hamburger.

Plans for the Brantley County
booth to be displayed at the fair
in Waycross was discussed by the
group.
Mrs. Manning served chicken
salad, sandwiches, cookies, pie
and lemonade.

Margaret Anderson, of Savan
nah, Georgia, to William Lee
Carmichael, of Cocoa, Florida, is
announced by her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Maurice Leroy Ander
son, of Nahunta, Georgia. Mr.
Carmichael is the son of Mr and
Mrs. Thrasher David Carmichael
Sr., of Cocoa.
Miss Anderson is a graduate of
Nahunta High School, Armstrong
College of Savannah, and Mer
cer University of Macon, Geor
gia. She is employed by the law
firm of Pierce & Ranitz. Mr.
Carmichael is a graduate of
Cocoa High School and Emory
University of Atlanta. He is as
sociated with his father in busi
ness in Cocoa.
The wedding is scheduled for
November 10th at the Central
Baptist Church in Waycross,
Georgia. The ceremony will be
performed by Dr. Julian T. Pip
kin, of Atlanta, at 2:30 o’clock
in the afternoon.

Three Brantley
Boys Enrolled at
Ga. State College
Philip G. Strickland, Thomas
E. O’Neal and Talmadge G. Dix
on enrolled as students for the
fall quarter at Georgia State Col
lege in Atlanta.
It was during the enrollment
period on September 21 that the
Board of Regents of the Univer
sity System of Georgia authoriz
ed the ( college to begin offering
the bachelor of arts degree with
majors in English, history, poli
tical science and psychology. Pre
viously the college had offered
a degree only in business admin
istration.
The new degree will be init
iated in January according to
Noah N. Langdale, Jr., college
president. Langdale recently suc
ceeded Dr. George M. Sparks
who has retired.
Students representing more
than 125 Georgia counties are
enrolled at Georgia State.

Brantley Company to Celebrate
10Oth Anniversary W ednesday
Gala festivities next Wednesday, October 16, will
mark the 100th Anniversary celebration of Pierce county’s
oldest and largest business firm, The Brantley Company
of Blackshear.
It will be one of the biggest
celebrations ever held in Geor
gia, with a mammoth free bar
becue, a parade, and a drawing
for SIO,OOO in free cash prizes.
The day’s program will get un
derway at 11:00 A. M. sharp next
Wednesday with a big parade
which will start from Nicholls
street and move down Main street
through town. The parade will
include three bands and numer
ous floats and exhibits repre
senting businesses, civic groups,
school, and depicting historical e
vents.

Funeral Services
Held Saturday
Funeral services of Albert
Woodrow Johns, 34, who died in
Augusta Wednesday, Oct. 2, were
held at the Bachlott Church of
God Saturday, Oct. 5, with Rev.
Noel Thrift conducting the ser
vices.
Burial was in the Bachlott
cemetery.
He was a son of Mrs. Irene
Johns and the late Albert Johns.
He is survived by his mother,
also four brothers, George M.,
Willis, Ellis and Vernon Johns'
four sisters, Mrs. Harley Johns
of Avon Park, Fla., Miss Gladys
Johns, Nahunta, Mrs. Cecil Cooke
and Mrs. Joseph Johns of Jack
sonville; and his grandmother
Mrs. Martha Nettles of Bruns
wick, Ga.

Ralph Carter Died
In Waycross Sunday
Ralph Emerson Carter, 40, of
Waycross, died Sunday night,
Oct. 6, in a Waycross hospital
after a short illness. A native of
Brantley County, he was a son
of the late Riley Carter and at
tended school in Hoboken. He
was an employe of the cigar fac
tory in Waycross.
Surviving are his wife, the
former Mary Frances Smith; his
mother, Mrs. Hattie May Crews
Carter of Waycross; three sisters,
Mrs. W. F. Wolfe and Mrs. B. H.
Howell, both of Waycross; and
Mrs. Frank Cooler of Savannah;
one half brother, L. P. Carter of
Nahunta; two half sisters, Mrs.
Celvin Ward of West Green and
Mrs. Charlie Merrit of Waycross;
and several nieces and nephews’

Blackshear recreational center
(swimming pool) and the Pierce
County Stock Yard. Preparations
are being made to serve 10,000
people.
At 2:00 o’clock in the after
noon next Wednesday, there will
be a brief speaking followed im
mediately by a drawing for
SIO,OOO in free cash prizes. The
prize list will be found else
where in this newspaper.
