PRESIDENT OF THE BRANTLEY COMPANY
Currency Exhibit Will
Be at Blackshear Bank
Leo J. Allen, President of The
Blackshear Bank, announced this
week that the Federal Reserve
Bank of Atlanta will set up a
currency exhibit in The Black
shear Bank.
The exhibit, mounted on swing
ing frames for easy viewing, con
tains more than 400 notes of
various kinds and denominations.
The exhibit will be set up
Monday, October 7, and will be
on display until October 21, Mr.
Allen stated. It is being shown
here as part of The Brantley
Company’s 100th Anniversary
celebration.
The notes range in denomina
tions from one-sixth of a dollar
to one thousand dollars and
range in issuance dates from 1775
to 1929.
According to the Federal Re
serve Bank of Atlanta the face
value of all the notes included
in the exhibit is $6,444.10. They
point out however that the act
ual value of the notes is approxi
mately $4,500.00 because the Con
tinental and Conferedate issues
have no value except as collec
tor’s items.
The exhibit consists .of 20
frames of aluminum and clear
plastic, mounted on a six-foot
pedestal, with the frames hinged
to turn like leaves in a book.
Many of the frames have signi
ficant historical value.
The frame of Continental cur
rency shows money used in this
country before our present gov
ernment was formed. The notes
were printed on paper of excel
lent quality, made entirely of
Irish linen with particles of isen
glass to give it strength. The
notes were signed by hand, each
bearing two signatures.
Another frame shows a collec
tion of Confererate currency, first
issued in 1861 and continuing un
til 1864. Others show currency
issued by state governments and
banks throughout the South, by
national banks, and by the Unit
ed States government from 1862
to 1929.
Each of the national bank
notes in the exhibit is accom
panied by a brief historical ac
count of the issuing bank. Some
of the United States currency
notes, because of their crisp un
circulated condition and date of
issue are regarded as rare speci
mens.
The exhibit is intended as a
display for study by bankers,
high school students, college
groups, and interested citizens.
Mr. Allen invites the public to
see the currency exhibit while it
is on display at The Blackshear
Bank.

POINTERS ABOUT PEARS
The Bartlett pear season is
here and the crop of nearly 23
million bushels is nearly 10 per
cent larger than last year’s crop,
says Mrs. Betty Alexander, con
sumer information specialist,
Agricultural Extension Service.
She suggests selecting pears that
are firm, but not hard, clean and
free from blemish, and well
shaped. They should be kept in
a cool, humid place in a fairly
airtight container. Fully ripe
pears should be kept in the re
frigerator.
Economists at the Agricultural
Extension Service report that in
come from livestock and their
products increased from $123
million in 1945 to $312 million
in 1956.
Beef should be aged about a
week at 38 to 40 degrees before
freezing it, advise food preserva
tionists at the University of Geor
gia College of Agriculture Ex
tension Service.
Pediatricians have found a di
rect relation between healing
children’s diseases and the a
mount of protein they take, says
Miss Audrey Morgan, family life
specialist, Agricultural Extension
Service.
Georgia has ten pulp mills lo
cated within the boundaries of
the state and several mills out
side the state draw wood from
Georgia, says Dorsey Dyer, for
ester, Agricultural Extension Ser
vice.

"A MAN OF WORDS, AND NOT OF DEEDS,
IS LIKE A GARDEN FULL OF WEEDS ...”
We must admit that words of promise are to be respected if
honored by action, but as the above saying states, words alone
are empty and useless.
In our daily lives we often come in contact with individuals
who in the sports world parlance ‘‘talk a good game”. Gener
ally speaking, this blustery front is harmless, but it is when
this same casual disregard for words is projected into situations
which affect our welfare that a lack of promised follow-through
can be disturbing.
Unfortunately we shall always have in our midst great talkers
who can twist and polish words into promises of glittering at
traction. However, when the time comes to reap the promised
bonanza, we find that our garden is, indeed, but a garden of
weeds.
