Branson Gets
30 Years for
Fla. Slaying
FERNANDINA BEACH, FLA.
—Walter Franklin Branson, 19,
of Jacksonville, formerly of
Blackshear, was sentenced Mon
day to 30 years in the state pri
son after pleading guilty to sec
ond degree murder in the July
1 hitchhike slaying of Eddie Lee
Charlton, 47-year-old Jackson
ville salesman.
Sentence was passed by Judge
Charles A. Luckie in Nassau
County Circuit Court. The grand
jury had indicted Branson for
first degree murder.
Branson, who was absent with
out leave from the Patuxent Ri
ver, Md., Naval Base at the time
of the slaying, contended after
his arrest and at the trial Mon
day that he pointed a pistol at
Charlton because Charlton was
driving recklessly and would not
let him out of the car. He said
the pistol fired when Charlton
attempted to take it from him.
Charlton’s body was found on
a dirt road about three miles
south of Hilliard by two Hilliard
residents shortly after the slay
ing. Branson was returned to
Nassau County the same night
after surrendering to authorities
in Blackshear, Ga., where he
had previously lived.
Branson was one of 15 persons
who gave testimony during the
day-long hearing.
He said he decided on May 19
to leave the naval station. He
testified he worked for a few
days in Jesup and Blackshear,
hitchhiked west for five days
and then returned to Jacksonville
to visit with his mother, Mrs.
Claude Johnson.
He said on June 30, a Sunday,
he decided to retprn to Patuxent
River and give himself up. He
was visiting with an uncle, Mur
dock F. Jones, and said he no
ticed a .32 caliber pistol in a
dresser drawer. He said he took
the pistol and eight cartridges
from the drawer without his un
cle’s knowledge.
He testified his uncle took him
to Edgewood avenue and U. S.
Highway One Monday afternoon
where Charlton gave him a lift.
He said Charlton appeared drow
sy and the car drifted back ahd
forth across the highway, al
most running one car off the
road. After passing through Cal
laham, he said, Charlton almost
ran into a truck. He testified he
had asked Charlton to let him
out three times but Charlton re
fused telling him he would car
ry him as far as Atlanta.
He said he took the pistol from
his bag and pointed it at Charl
ton to scare him. He said Charl
ton turned off U. S. One onto a
dirt road and snatched at the
gun which went off.
Branson testified he dragged
Charlton from the car and placed
him alongside the road. He said
he was so frightened he qpuld
think of nothing but running so
he got in Charlton’s car and
drove to Blackshear where he
surrendered voluntarily to night
policeman M. W. Phillips.
Only one shot had been fired
from the pistol which was found
in Charlton’s car after Branson
surrendered.

“THAT MAN WHO LIVES FOR SELF ALONE LIVES FOR
THE MEANEST MORTAL KNOWN ...”
The foregoing words by Joaquin Miller are a well-directed
stab at the self-centered element that thinks and acts solely
for self-aggrandizement.
It’s true, of course, that an ambition to improve one’s lot is
only natural. However, it is when ambition or the act of bring
ing desires to fulfillment assumes overwhelming personal signi
ficance that a treacherous personality is born. Greed, an in
ability to work in the community spirit and boorishness are but
a few of the by-products of the mortal who elects to live for
self alone.
Interest in those about us and willingness to lend a hand when
reward is not immediately foreseeable, are the marks of those
who choose not to succumb to the weakness of the “self alone”
attitude so adroitly exploded by Joaquin Miller.
