$17,000 Pledged Toward
Industrial Corporation
A large crowd of Pierce county citizens last Thurs
day attended the first mass meeting called in the current
effort to obtain new industry for Blackshear. Approxi
mately $17,00Q in stock has been pledged toward a cor
peration for that purpose.
J. Curtis Smith, industrial de
velopment specialist with the
Georgia Power Company in At
lanta, was principal speaker at
the meeting.
A charter is being issued for
a non-profit organization to be
known as the Blackshear Indus
trial Development Corpcration to
seek industry for the Blackshear
area.
Applicants for the charter are
John Shackelford, who is presi
dent-elect of the Blackshear -
Pierce County Chamber of Com
merce, S. M. Waters and Alvin
M. Ratliff.
Pledges are now b e i n 2 taken
to buy stock in the corporation
at SSO per share.
Mr. Smith Thursday night ex
plained various aspects of what
is necessary for a town to obtain
new industry. He said industry
seeking new locations need mar
kets, natural resources, available
labor, and strategic location, as:

Discussing the trend toward
greater industrialization of the
South, Mr. Smith said that 10
years ago Georgia had only 4,000
manufacturing plants, but that
today it has approximately 7,000
plants.
Some advantages which Geor
gia offers industry, he said are
its natural resources of water,
climate and forests. Construction
costs, taxes, living expenses and
operational expenses are also
lower in this section, he pointed
out.
Touching on the trend toward
concentration of population in
urban areas, Mr. Smith told the
group that smaller communities
must plan toward providing more
jobs for young people, increasing
per capita income, and changing
more toward an urban economy.
Communities desiring industry,
le stated, must work hard and
long for results. They should
compile and have available in
formation on the advantages and
facilities they have to offer, find
industrial prospects and follow
up all leads possible.
He also discussed advertising
and promotion for industry and
how community improvement
helps in the effort to get indus
try. How the Georgia Power
Company and other agencies can
help was outlined.
At Thursday’s meeting, the Ro
tary Club won the prize of $lO
for having the greatest percen
tage of its members present.
Rev. R. C. Johnson presided
at the meeting. Alvin M. Ratliff
explained the new industrial de
velopment corporation. James B.
Hendry presented an aerial view
map showing several industrial
sites which are available in this
area.

“IT IS BETTER TO DESERVE AND NOT RECEIVE, THAN TO
RECEIVE AND NOT DESERVE ...”
Although the vast majority of us very understandably enjoy
being on the receiving end —whether it be presents or plaudits
—few of us could completely enjoy our gains if we knew them
to be undeserved. There is a shallowness to undeserved gains
which usually more than offsets whatever temporary delight or
satisfaction one might initially receive.
It is unfortunate, of course, that the deserving are not always
on the receiving end of the good things of life. However, when
the deserving see good fortune or recognition or any one of a
thousand benefits pass them by, they can take a good measure
of satisfaction in the knowledge that the undeserving will enjoy
an uneasy windfall.
