DEER ANATOMY LIKE HUMANS,
SO MAKE SHOTS COUNT
^TT was the most perfect shot I ever made,” the man was

and ran.”
aunuar iu numans in mat
they are made up of several systems—
circulatory, muscular, and skeletel along with others
of equal importance.
It is necessary for hunters to understand that, although
these systems are important in the functions of life, they
are not necessary and a bullet wound in one will not result
in death, just in deformation.
For example, unless a hunter’s bullet pierces the entire
brain, not a segment, chances are he will lose his prize and
the deer will be deformed the rest of its life.
Besides offering only a small moving target, “brain
shots” are not instantaneous death, contrary to many
beliefs. Unless hunters’ shots hit the brain proper, they
will do nothing more than paralyze, blind or stun deer.
“Neck shots” and “spine shots” have much the same
effect. A shot in the neck, for example, may paralyze,
blind or stun a deer if it does not kill it.
Quickest Way Is The Heart
A newspaper story of a year ago is a good example of
a hunter maiming, not killing, a deer.
Seems a hunter had scored a neck shot and, upon seeing
his target lying helplessly upon the ground, put his gun
down and lit up a cigarette.
Seconds later, the deer regained the energy he had
lost momentarily and ran off—with the man’s rifle
which he had rested against the deer’s antlers.
The quickest way to bring down a deer is a shot to the
heart. Although the inuscles around the heart often close
up quickly after a wound due to their elasticity, a good,
clean-landing bullet in that area will bring the deer down
and actually do it a favor. For if a deer must be shot, it
is better to put it down for good than to leave it in a
crippled condition.
From this discussion, it may sound as though the
animal will escape unless you hit it directly in the
heart. That’s not the case. As has been said, the heart
is the best place. But it is also the hardest for a deer’s
heart offers little to shoot at when the animal is in full
motion.
Actually, the most effective shot is in the shoulder area
where, if it penetrates deep enough, a shot may strike the
heart, paralyze the front legs long enough for you to
capture the deer or impair the function of the spinal cord.

“I plugged him in the neck with a
clean shot and knew he had ‘had it’, yet
he got up and ran.”
This little drama will be repeated
many more times before this deer season
ends. Too many hunters don’t realize that
deer must be hit clean, just like humans,
before they go down for the final count
It will do all of us good to sit down
and take a lesson on animal anatomy.
