Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Stephens
of Nahunta announce the birth
of a baby girl, born May 12 in
the Folkston Hospital. It weighed
four pounds five ounces and has
been named Lillian Janet.

Undergoes Surgery
After Mercy Flight
Mrs. Onie Aspinwall, Pierce
county ordinary’, underwent
surgery at Duke University Hos
pital, Durham, N. C., on Mon
day morning of this week.
The operation, to relieve vas
cular expansion of a major blood
vessel supplying the brain, was
successful, but her condition re
mained critical, it was reported
Wednesday.
Mrs. Aspinwall was flown to
Durham by the U. S. Air Force
Friday morning. Through the ef
forts of Rev. R. C. Johnson, a
mercy flight from Turner Air
Force Base, Albany, was author
ized.
A four-motor transport plane
with a seven-man crew and two
flight nurses landed in Waycross
and rushed Mrs. Aspinwall to
Durham-Raleigh Air Force Base
where an ambulance waited a
long with her sister, Mrs. H. A.
Averette, to complete the trip.
Leaving Blackshear at the same
time by car was her daughter
Mrs. J. C. Hague, and sisters,
Mrs. R. D. Ridley, Mrs. Iva Lee
McGauley, and Mrs. Ethel You
mans. All the other children
have since joined them at Duke.
Mrs. Aspinwall was recently a
patient in a Jacksonville hospit
laL She returned home May 11.
However her condition grew
worse Thursday night. Friday
morning the U. S. Air Force au
thorized the mercy flight which
rushed her to Duke Hospital for
temporary relief and preparation
for surgery.
During Mrs. Aspinwall’s ab
sence from the ordinary office
her duties will be handled by
Mrs. Joyce D. Howard, whom
she appointed Clerk of Ordinary
prior to leaving, and Judge Har
vey D. Griffin, who, according to
law, will handle necessary legal
matters.
