Enroll Total of 1718 Pupils
The total .enrollment in the
white schools of Brantley County
at the beginning of the fall term
was 1580, it is announced by sup
erintendent Herschel W. Herrin.
The negro school enrolled 138
pupils, making a total of 1718 in
all the county schools.

25, weighing eight pounds and
two ounces. He has been named

Held Sunday

P. Johnson met at Laura S. Walk
er Park last Sunday for a family
reunion. Dinner was spread and
enjoyed by the group.

Oremco Members Will Hold
Meeting in Nahunta Sept. 13
The Annual Membership Meet
ing of Okefenokee Rural Electric
Membership Corporation will be
held at the High School Gym in
Nahunta, Georgia on Saturday,
Sept. 13, registration beginning at
9:00 a. m. and the program be
ginning at 10:00 a. m.
The guest speaker will be Will
iam T. Crisp, Executive Manager,
Tarheel Electric Membership As
sociation, Inc., Raleigh, N. C.,
who is one of the outstanding
young speakers of the south.
The many friends of Okefenoke
are invited to attend. Many fine
gifts will be given to members
and free drinks, candy, and mov
ies will be provided for the chil
dren.
The program will include re
ports of officers and directors
and election of directors from
Brantley County, Georgia and
Baker County, Florida. The in
cumbent directors are J. C. Allen,
Nahunta, J. V. Strickland, Way
cross, and J. D. Burnsed, Glen
St. Mary, Florida. The same three
men have been nominated to suc
ceed themselves.
Okefenoke Co-op is owned and
controlled entirely by its 4,200
rural members in Brantley, Cam
den, Charlton, Glynn, Ware, and
Wayne Counties, Georgia, and
Baker, Duval, and Nassau Coun
ties, Florida.

Funeral Service
Was Held Tuesday
Mr. William Oscar Strickland,
61, of Nahunta passed away Sun
day, Sept. 7, at Memorial Hos
pital in Brunswick after an ex
tended illness.
Mr. Strickland was born in
Wayne county, now Brantley, ana
was the son of William R. Strick
land and the late Alice Crosby
Strickland. He received his edu
cation in the schools of the coun
ty and was a devoted member of
the Nahunta Baptist Church and
had served on its Board of Dea
cons. He was a veteran of World
War 1, having served in the Ar
my and was a charter member of
Brantley County Post 210 of the
American Legion. For the great
er portion of his life, he was an
automobile mechanic.
In addition to his father, Mr.
Strickland is survived by his wife
the former Miss Rachel DePrat
ter of Nahunta; one son, W. R.
(Bob) Strickland of Nahunta; his
step-mother, Mrs. Mamie Strick
land of Nahunta; four brothers,
J. O. and Edwin Strickland, both
of Nahunta, J. Marvin Strick
land of Waycross, and Q. L.
Stricland of San Diego, Calif.;
four half-sisters, Mrs. Kenyon
East of Conway, S. C., Mrs. T.
L. Gallman of Oneonta, Ala., Mrs.
John Snare of Gainesville, Ga.,
and Mrs. Hal Crawford of Savan
nah; four half-brothers, H. L.
Strickland of Nahunta, Reuben
Strickland of Mount Berry, Ga.,
Barney Strickland of Westfield,
N. J., and Arthur Strickland of
Waycross; several nieces and
nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday afternoon, September 9,
at 3:30 o’clock from the Nahunta
Baptist Church with his pastor,
the Rev. Cecil F. Thomas, assis
ted by a former pastor, the Rev.
C. E. Milton, conducting the rites
in the presence of a large num
ber of sorrowing relatives .and
friends.
Interment followed at Hickox
Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were
Messrs. Elroy Strickland, Avery
Strickland, George Dykes, W. C.
Long, J. T. Morgan, and Buck
Thrift.
The many beautiful floral of
ferings attested to the high es
teem in which Mr. Strickland
was held by those who had the
privilege of knowing him, and
his passing leaves a void both in
his church and this community.

of Nahunta was in charge of ar
rangements.-
Sergeant First Class George W.
Herrin, Jr., whose father lives
on Route 1, Nahunta, Ga. recent
ly completed a helicopter re
pair course at the Army Trans
portation School, Fort Eustis, Va.
Sergeant Herrin entered the Ar
my in 1944 and holds the Combat
Infantryman Badge among his
decorations. The sergeant attend
ed Nahunta High School.

Farm Bureau
Starts Drive
For Members
The Brantley County Farm
Bureau ‘will start its annual fall
drive for members beginning
Tuesday, Sept. 16, it is announ
ced by John I. Lee, county presi
dent.
Each year officials of the coun
ty, state and national Farm Bu
reau units put on a campaign
for membership, with the local
county units putting on drives to
maintain membership and unite
for supporting policies beneficial
to farmers generally.
Farm Bureau policies orginate
from County Farm Bureau units
and the individual .members, ac
cording to Farm Bureau officials.
All farmers in Brantley Coun
ty are urged to join the Farm
Bureau, also many business men
who support the Farm Bureau
as associate members.
Lacy L. Walker
Funeral Service
Held Monday
Funeral services for Lacy L.
Walker, 33, of Hoboken, who
died Friday, was held Monday
at 3 p. m. at Pierce Chapel Met
hodist Church, with burial in the
church cemetery.
Walker was a native of Brant
ley County and was a member
of the Methodist Church.
He was a Navy veteran of
World War Two and earned three
battle stars, and a Presidential
Citation. He also participated in
an expedition to the South Pole
under Admiral Richard Byrd. He
was a member of the Jackson
ville Chapter of the Disabled Am
erican Veterans. 1
Surviving are his wife; a broth
er, M. E. Walker, Waycross, and
four sisters, Mrs. Odis Bass, Co
lumbus, Mrs. John Clark, Jack
sonville, Fla., Mrs. Leon Griffis,
Hoboken and Mrs. Hillie Thomas,
of Douglas. »

To Preach in
Baptist Revival
The fall revival of the Na
hunta Baptist Church will be run
ning next .week.
The beginning will be Sunday,
Sept. 14, and continue through
Sunday night, the 21st. Dr. Arthur
Hinson, of Tucker, Ga., one of the
outstanding Baptist Leaders of
Georgia, will be the visiting
preacher.
Mr. Donahue Strickland, of
Nashville, Tenn., and who has
many relatives over this section,
will direct the singing with the
help of the regular choir, the col
lege young people, and the school
teachers who are such a great
help to us. We invite you to come
and enjoy this great part of the
service.
Also, a feature of each evening
service will be the children’s
song program. Under good leader
ship, the boys and girls through
12 years of age are invited to
come at 7:15 each evening to
practice songs and choruses. All
children from the adjoining com
munities are invited to come and
be in this fine choir group.
The Sunday services will be
held at the regular time: Sunday
School at 10:00 a. m., and the
morning worship at 11:00; while
the B. T. U. will begin at 7:00
p. m., with the evening service
at 8:00. During the week days
the morning service will be at
9:00 a. m. and the evening wor
ship at 7:30 p. m., with plenty
of songs you .will enjoy joining
in with.
The entire community is invit
ed by pastor Cecil F. Thomas,
and the church.
John Willis left on Tuesday
of last week to go to Clinton,
South Carolina where he has en
tered Presbyterian College. He is
the son of Mrs. George Willis.

Hayes Reelected;
Blitch Returned
To Congress Post
Lieut-Gov. S. Ernest Vandiver
Wednesday won the Georgia
Democratic nomination for gov
ernor by a landslide majority of
unit and popular votes.
At press time early Thursday
Vandiver was leading with 208
unit votes to 10 for his nearest
opponent, the Rev. William T.
Bodenhamer. Lee Roy Aberna
thy had no unit votes.
Vandiver had 345,054 popular
votes, Bodenhamer 58,147 and
Abernathy 22,912.
Vandiver carried Brantley
County 1138 to Bodenhamer’s
279. Abernathy got 58 votes in
Brantley.
Although vote totals were not
available locally, Garland Byrd
w.as reported leading over the
state in popular and unit votes
for lieutenant-governor and was
conceeded to be the winner. C. J.
Broome carried Brantley County
with 817 votes to 310 for Bryd.
Odom got 177 votes in Brantley.
Congresswoman Iris F. Blitch
was winning a landslide victory
in her race for reelection in the
Bth District. Thursday morning
totals gave her 19,326 votes to
5,520 for her opponent, W. M.
(Don) Wheeler. Blitch had 34 unit
votes to none for Wheeler.
Dewey Hayes of Douglas appa
rently had been reelected as Soli
citor General of the Waycross
Judicial Circuit by a substantial
majority.
In Brantley County’s only lo
cal race J. Floyd Larkins was
reelected as state representative
with 788 votes to 691 for his
opponent E. L. Sears.

ried 50 years ago on Sept. 5, 1908.
