The Old South Georgia Singing
Convention will convene in the
Nahunta High School Gym, in
Nahunta, on the third Sunday
in September.
It is expected that many fine
groups of singers will be here to
participate from several states.
An official stated that this is
the oldest singing organization in
South Georgia.
It was organized in 1875, in
Irwin County, Georgia, by Will
iam Royal “Uncle Billy,” as he
was known by his many friends.
It was given the name, South
Georgia Singing Convention.
It was held in Irwin County
for several years and later as it
was attended more and more it
was invited into different ad
joining Counties. As years passed
by it has been carried into var
ious cities, towns and communi
ties. *
The singing has convened every
year since its organization ex
cept once during World War 11,
when gasoline was rationed.
This is the oldest singing .con
vention, that we know of, and the
first song book that was used in
the organization, was Christian
Harmony, published by the late
Wm. Walker of Spartanburg, S.
C. Mr. Walker will be remember
ed as the author of the ever popu
lar hymn “Amazing Grace”.
The first President of the con
vention, was “Uncle Billy” Roy
al of Ocilla, Georgia. The pres
ent President is E. L. Smith of
Brunswick, Georgia, with Marion
Williams, first vice president,
Quitman, Georgia. D. L. Griffin,
Hazlehurst, second vice president
and Mrs. Carl Bishop, Statesboro,
as secretary and treasurer of the
organization.
