$700,000 Suit
As Fire Result
Is Being Tried
Testimony was being heard in
federal court at Waycross Wed
nesday in the $700,000 damage
suit filed by eight Pierce coun
tians against two oil companies.
Judge Frank M. Scarlett was
presiding as the case was heard.
The damage suit grew out of a
flash fire in Blackshear in which
George Lee Sr. and Malcolm Lee,
a small child, were killed.
The fire was said to have start
ed when George Lee Sr. poured
a can of kerosene in a coal heat
er trying to start a fire in the
late afternoon of Feb. 28, 1956.
Plaintiffs are Mrs. Earnest Car
ter, George Lee Jr., Mrs. George
Smith, Malcolm Lee, Earl Lee,
Mrs. Earl Carter, Mrs. Lewis
Chaney and Earnest Carter.
Defendants are the Phillips
Petroleum Co. and Sinclair Re
fining Co.
। The plaintiffs are seeking to
prove that the can of kerosene
bought by Mr. Lee Sr. contained
a large amount of gasoline or was
all gasoline.
YOUR HELP
NEEDED
The Brantley Enterprise,
like most newspapers, oper
ates on a rather tight sche
dule which is built around
deadlines that must be met.
This statement is made to
call attention to the fact
that all news copy, in order
to be assured of publication
must be in the Brantley En
terprise office not later than
Wednesday noon.
Sorry, we just can’t guar
antee that it’ll be printed if
it is received later than
Wednesday noon!
Hardly a week goes by
but that some news items are
received later than this. In
most cases extra effort is
made and the item gets in
the paper, but it works a
hardship on the staff, and it
often means night work.
COLLEGE FAILURES
• Forty percent of. failures in
college seem to result from poor
high school grades and Lack of
interest in college work, says
Miss Audrey Morgan, Extension
family life specialist. Encourage
ment by parents while youngsters
are still in lower grades will do
much to forward their success in
college, she adds.
COTTON VALUES
Improper harvesting, handling,
ginning and wrapping lower the
quality of cotton in some instan
ces as much as ss’to sls a bale,
say Extension cotton marketing
specialists.
GOOD BREAKFASTS
Research has shown that a good
breakfast is necessary to maxi
mum physical and mental effic
iency during the late morning
hours, according to Miss Lucile
Higginbotham, Extension health
specialist. Active boys and girls
do better school work after a
good breakfast.
BABY SITTERS
Although 48 percent of Ameri
ca’s teen-age girls and 23 percent
of its teen-age boys work as
baby-sitters, only 46 percent of
the girls and only a very small
percentage of the boys have had
any training in child guidance,
says Miss Audrey Morgan, Exten
sion family life specialist.
OAT DISEASES
Crown rust is presently the
No. 1 disease of oats in Georgia,
says Frank McGill, Extension ag
ronomist. The best method of con
trol is to use the latest oat vari
ties resistant to current races of
of rust as developed by plant
breeders. Seed treatment will not
help control crown rust.

Friday Is Final
Date for Applying
For Payment Rate
Friday, October 3, is the final
date for producers to file an ap
plication to have a payment rate
set for their farm if they wish
to place acreage in Conservation
Reserve (Soil Bank) for 1959, ac
cording to Dan H. Jacobs, Mana
ger of the Brantley ASC County
Office.
Farmers who have been con
sidering planting some of their
land to trees can put’it in the
Conservation Reserve of the Soil
Bank. Jacobs said that in addi
tion to receiving a substantial
part of the cost of planting the
trees, participating farmers will
also get annual per-acre rental
payments on land put in the pro
gram. Since all Conservation Re
serve contracts for the planting
of forest trees must run for 10
years, participants will receive
annual payments over this period
