Small Business Administration
To Aid Business in This Area
A representative of the Small
Business Administration will be
at the Waycross Chamber of
Commerce, 409 Plant Avenue, on
Wednesday of each week, starting
March 4, to interview small busi
nessmen in the Southeast Georgia
area, who may be interested in
receiving SBA assistance.
In making this announcement
James F. Hollingsworth, SBA
regional director at Atlanta, said
there had been a desire express
ed by small business concerns in
South Georgia to bring the Agen
cy’s services, which include loan
assistance, closer to businessmen
of the area.
SBA offers three major servi
ces to small firms, including con
tract assistance by which it aids
businesses with less than 500 em
ployees to obtain a fair share of
government contracts, both mili
tary and civilian. Management
aid is made available to assist
owners of small concerns with
their problem through counsel
ing, publications and cooperation
with educational institutions in
furnishing administrative man
agement courses for owners.
A major function of SBA’s ser
vices consists of loans to small
manufacturers, wholesalers, re
tailers and service institutions
when financing is not otherwise
available to them on reasonable
terms. Loans made by SBA in
clude financing to cover expan
sion and modernization, the pur
chase of equipment or machinery
and materials, and to supply
working capital. A majority of
the Agency’s loans are .made in
participation with the applicant’s
local bank, although loans- can
be made direct where bank par
ticipation cannot be worked out,
depending on the availability of
adequate collateral and good cred
it factors, Hollingsworth pointed
out.

Delivers City
$1,974 Check
A check for $1,973.75 was de
livered to the city of Nahunta
by B. F. David, Local Manager
of the Georgia Power Company.
This payment represents three
per cent of the gross receipts in
1958 from the sale of electric
power to commercial and resi
dential customers of the com
pany under the Municipal Part
nership Plan. The three per cent
tax is paid by the company in
place of occupation and franchise
taxes and is in addition to the
company’s property taxes which
totaled $5,270,000 last year.
More than $2,135,000 is being
paid to the communities of Geor
gia for 1958 under the Municipal
Partnership Plan. This is an in
crease of more than $117,000 over
1957.
The company’s total tax bill for
1958 was $26,600,000. This does
not include the sales tax which
the company collects from its
customers for the State of Geor
gia nor the sales tax which the
company pays on materials used
in its operations.
English Lady
Spelled It
"Runnymead"
An English exchange teacher
who stopped at the Runnymede
Motel in Nahunta Monday night,
Feb. 23, was impressed by the
name of the motel and attempted
to write a poem about it.
As most people should know,
Runnymede was the place in Eng
land where the barons wrested
the Great Charter of English lib
erties from King John on June
15, 1215. In Latin it was called
“Magna Carta.”
The English lady told Roy Har
per that she was here in the
United States as an exchange
teacher. Anyway, her verses
showed some mistakes in dates
and in spelling, as follows;
“Magna Carta 1290”
“When kings were kings and rul
ed with might
And every word was law oh!
And Knights and barons fought
for right
To have their own opinions,
Disputes arose, they came to
blows,
It was a situation!
They took king John to Runny-
mead
To sign a declaration.
The fateful year I will relate
And specify the data.
They rode King John upon the
Thames
To sign the Magna Carta.
They made the laws, they form-
ed the clause
For the English constitution.
So come to stay in historical way

Folkston Beats Broxton to
Win Regional Championship
By PAUL ROBINSON
Sports Editor ,
Waycross Journal-Herald
PEARSON — Folkston’s Cin
derella Five continued its amaz
ing control-type of play here last
night and refused to yield to
pressure to clip Broxton’s high
ly regarded Buccaneers 50-44 in
the Region 1-B East boys basket
ball tourney finals before an
overflow crowd in the Atkinson
County gym.
It took a tremendous come
back by Horace Knight’s never
say-die Indians from Charlton
County to turn the tide, however.
They trailed Broxton for much of
the game then overcame a six
point deficit in the final five min
utes of play to cop what is be
lieved to be their first basketball
trophy ever.
Down 44-38 with 5:25 remain
ing on the scoreboard clock, the
Indians began a move that saw
them flip in 12 straight points
while holding Broxton scoreless
to win 50-44.
Folkston’s first lead came with
3:25 remaining although they had
fought from behind several times
to knot the score. But once the
Warriors got the scent of victory,
they stayed on the path until the
final horn.
BROXTON LEADS
Broxton scored first and built
up a 5-0 lead before the Indians
broke into the scoring column.
The Charlton lads fought back in
the closing minutes of the first
stanza to knot the score twice
but the Buccaneers of Gene
Withrow’s moved into a 9-7 lead
at the first rest. «
After deadlocking the score at
13-13 early on the second canto,
Folkston lost its touch momen
tarily and fell behind 28-18 at
halftime. The Braves from Charl
ton came within two points of
knottting the score' twice in the
third quarter but faltered and
fell behind 39-32 at the three
quarter mark.
Then came the thrilling last
stanza and the Folkston rally
that brought ultimate victory.
Broxton stayed ahead five to
six points in the first three min
utes of the closing period. Then
Charlton made its move.
INDIANS CLICK
The Indians began clicking and
whittling away at the deficit un
til with 3:25 left David James
gave Folkston its first lead of the
game at 45-44. The Warriors then
began to play out the clock.
Broxton missed two scoring op
portunities in the space of a min
ute and James sneaked in for a
layup to .make it 47-44 with 55
seconds remaining. Jimmy Phil
lips added a free throw after
Broxton missed another scoring
chance to send Folkston to a 48-
44 lead then Harlan Carter tossed
in the last basket in the final
four seconds to sew up the con
test 50-44.

GAME STARS
To single out an individual star
would be almost impossible. The
10-leading performers were bril
liant almost without exception.
Folkston had three men in
double figures. David James was
high with 20, Jimmy Phillips
had 13 and Joe Conner had 12.
Paul Johnson and John Stud
still hit the two-digit column for
Broxton, getting 13 and 12, re
spectively.
