HERE’S
ANOTHER
PACKAGE OF POWER
YOU ORDERED
YES, YOU ORDERED IT by indicating you would
use more and more electricity in the years
ahead.
It’s quite a package, this turbo-generator
just installed at Plant McManus, near Bruns
wick. It weighs almost a million pounds, yet is
built to the precise tolerances of a fine watch.
Under that sleek design is a generating capac
ity of 75,000 kilowatts, which exceeds the power
of all the work animals — horses and mules —
in Georgia.
The sls-million expansion of Plant McManus
is only a single step in our construction pro
gram. Since World War II we have spent nearly
half a billion dollars expanding and improving
the electrical facilities that serve you. We have
almost tripled our generating capacity, more
than doubled our miles of power lines.
That kind of growth makes sure that you
have plenty of low-cost and dependable elec
tricity whenever and wherever you need it.

Use of MH-30
On Tobacco Has
Adverse Effects
The following discussion of the
use of MH-30 on tobacco is re
printed from the quarterly report
of Tobacco Associates, Inc.:
Recently, the advantages and
disadvantages of the use of ma
leic hydrazide (MH-30) have
come up again for consideration.
This has been a controversial is
sue for over two years. In Octo
ber 1958, the Tobacco Associates
Quality Committee reviewed this
matter fully and completely with
representatives of the major ci
garette manufacturing firms us
ing flue-cured tobacco, both in
the United States and in foreign
countries. The conclusions of this
review were set forth in our Oct
ober-December 1958 bulletin.
This matter has again been re
viewed with these buying inter
ests and again they have stated
that they do not think that this
material should be used on to
bacco. It has been estimated that
the quality of a substantial pro
portion of the flue-cured tobacco
crop was adversely affected by
the use of this material last year.
So far as we can tell at this time,
some of this tobacco is not suit
able for any use.
Adverse Effects
Both domestic and foreign
manufacturers generally agree
that, under average weather con
ditions and normal farm prac
tices, the use of MH-30 impairs
the desirability of flue-cured leaf
on which it is used because it
adversely affects the quality of
the final product — the cigarette.
Cigarette manufacturers have
indicated that some of the effects
on chemical and physical prop
erties of the cured leaf caused
by the application of MH-30 are
as follows:
The nicotine-to-sugar ratio and
the amount of petroleum ether
extractives in the leaf are re
duced, with corresponding re
duction in the flavor and aroma
of the cured leaf.
The leaf becomes a little hea
vier per unit of area thereby re
ducing the * filling value of the
tobacco. There is a loss of color.
Tips have a tendency to thicken
and become “leathery”. The leaf
is often soggy, thick, slick, and
generally of very poor condition.
Treated tobaccos gave a larger
proportion of inferior cigarettes
— more soft ends, generally less
firm, and not as well filled. Ci
garettes burn less freely and
have a tendency to go out more
easily, and they do not taste as
good.
The results of tests which have
been made by some tobacco man
ufacturers indicate that if much
more of the tobacco grown in
the flue-cured area were treated
with MH-30, it would me impos
sible for manufacturers to main
tain the level of quality of cigar
ettes. The cigarettes manufactur
ed from such leaf have poor phy
sical form and are weak and
bland. Such a situation would,
of course, cause an unfavorable
reaction among the smoking pub
lic and undoubtedly result in a
lowering in the consumption of
cigarettes.
What Manufacturers Say
About Use of MH-30
Both domestic and overseas
cigarette manufacturers have
stated emphatically that use of
MH-30 has a deteriorating effect
on the quality of the leaf.
They gay that under average
weather conditions and farm
practices commonly followed, it
will:
1. Adversely affect the color of
leaf.
2. Decrease flavor and aroma.
3. Often cause leaf to be lea
thery, thick, slick, and soggy.
Excerpts Taken From
Company Reports
Company A. “The cured leaf
suffers a loss of color and there
is an increase in the weight per
unit area of the leaf. These
changes reduce the quality of the
tobacco. The tips have a tenden
cy to thicken and in many cases
become leathery and unuseable.
The leaf is soggy, thick, dense,
