Tree Farm Tips
By Erle T. Newsom Jr.,
Chairman, Georgia Tree Farm
Committee
Like most any other plant,
pine trees grow best when the
competition is least, especially
when they are just getting start
ed, For this reason, just as in
the case of cotton or corn, it is
generally helpful—and sometimes
necessary—to reduce competitive
vegetation in order that the
shade-hating seedlings will have
a chance to reach maturity and
be harvested. .
When this is done before the
seedlings are set out it is called
“site preparation.’’ A certain a
mount of preparation is nearly
always necessary when trying to
regenerate a sandy, dry site and
where other vegetation is com
peting vigorously for the limited
moisture and nutrients in the
soil. By contrast, on the better
growing sites preparation if often
unnecessary because the pines
will outgrow competing vegeta
tion if free from hampering over
head and side competition.
The simplest way of eliminat
ing vegetation or small cull hard
woods is by grubbing them out
with a hoe. Right behind this
method in simplicity and negligi
ble cash outlay comes the gird
ling axe, which is used on the
bigger cull trees in conjunction
with chemicals to eliminate
sprouting. Either ammate or such
preparations as 2,4-D or 2,4,5-T
are preferred for this function.
If you are a farmer the
chances are you have a disc. This
is especially good for breaking
up thick sod and knocking down
heavy brush, particularly necees
sary when seed is being used in
stead of planting stock.
Another favored method, which
should never be used without an
experienced forester to help, is

Air-Conditioning
For Entire House
Is Getting Cheaper
Central air-conditioning — tor
new homes is getting cheaper,
report the editors of Changing
Times, the Kiplinger Magazine.
In the last five years, the cost of
equipping a new home with com
plete air-conditioning has been
cut from about ten per cent of
the price of the house to as little
as five per cent, the editors re
port.
Equipment manufacturers are
preparing to market integrated
heating and cooling units for
SI,OOO or less. Completely air
conditioned homes can then be
bought for SIO,OOO. And a figure
of $lO a month is a future pos
sibility for heating and cooling
and the average house anywhere
in the country.
Cost of installing an air cool
ing unit in a new house is con
siderably less than in an old one.
If the house was designed to ac
comodate cooling later, installa
tion is comparatively inexpensive.
In older homes, however, adap
tation is an expensive proposi
tion. The addition of a new fur
nace, changing duct systems and
outlets all add to the cost.
You can count on an extra $125
to $175 for each ton of cooling
capacity if you are installing air
conditioning in an older house.
To get a rough idea, allow $225
to $375 a tbn for air-conditioning
installed during construction, and
S4OO to SSOO to install a unit in
an older house.
The editors report that a well
designed and insulated house re
quires one ton of cooling for
every 600 feet of floor area.
Therefore, a house with 1,500
feet of floor space needs a two
and a half ton air cooling unit.
Operating costs vary widely
because of variations in construc
tion, insulation, shading, and geo
graphical location. For example,
in Haddonfield, New Jersey, costs
ranged from $12.86 to $55.10.
Whereas in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
costs ran from $52.30 to SIOB. As
a rule of thumb, the editors say
you should add 10 percent to
your home budget for the cost of
owning and operating an air-con
ditioning system.

prescribed burning — intentional
ly burning the brush when con
ditions are just right to use this
method. Generally employed to
rid a field of masses of shrubs
and small cull trees, the trick is
to know when conditions are
“just right,” something only a
forester experienced in the use
of fire can tell you.
Don’t try it by yourself.
It’s not always the best thing
to rid a field of brush and culls
before planting. Sometimes, for
reasons of protection, it is ad
vantageous to plant pine seed
lings under an overstory of
hardwoods, especially in dry,
windy areas. If this is done, how
ever, the seedlings should be re
leased from their hardwood um
brella within the first year after
they are set out. Otherwise they
are liable to suffer setbacks in
height growth if not outright mor
tality.
The method of site preparation
to use depends on the equipment
available, the time of the year,
type of competitive vegetation,
soil conditioning and whether
seed or seedlings are being used.
In the case of direct seeding some
site preparation should always be
employed ,if only to clean off the
turf and expose the mineral soil
Generally speaking, prescribed
burning should be carried out in
the early spring before the woods
get green, in the late fall just
before the seed crop is spread.
Chemicals are usually most ef
fective in late spring or early
summer. Grubbing or disking can
be done most anytime.
Watch the label on your
paper — don’t let your sub-
scription expire.
