Three forte were erected in what is now Cook County during
the Indian outbreaks of 1836. One of these forts was the site
of a bloody and decisive battle in which a large band of Indi
ans was defeated by Georgia militia. Today, Cook County is
a well-rounded farming community. Tobacco is the main cash
crop, with corn, cotton, and truck crops, primarily water
melons, lending healthy diversification to the farm economy.
Cook ranked seventh in tobacco production and eighth in
watermelons among Georgia counties in 1955. Adel, the
county seat, is a thriving manufacturing center with metal
working, furniture making, fertilizer production, and meat
packing among the primary industries.
In Cook County, and throughout Georgia, the United
States Brewers Foundation works constantly to assure the
sale of beer and ale under pleasant, orderly conditions. Believ
ing that strict law enforcement serves the best interest of the
people of Georgia, the Foundation stresses close cooperation
with the Armed Forces, law enforcement- and governing
officials in its continuing "self-regulation” program.
