Cotton Growing
Demonstrations
To Boost Yields
For the convenience of farmers
who wish to compare their cotton
production practices with those
recommended by the College of
Agriculture, complete cotton dem
onstrations have been established
in eight counties by the Agricult
ural Extension Service.
Farmers cooperating in this
program are: Jack Harrell, Mit
chell county; Billy Jones, Terrell;
Charles Williams, Crisp; R. H.
Williams, Wilcox; W. H. Waller,
Irwin; Ray Hitchcock, Washing
ton; Lannis Etheridge, Jackson,
and Crowder Mitchum, Meri
wether.
W. H. Sell, Extension agrono
mist for the University of Geor
gia, said that county agents will
supervise the cotton demonstra
tions according to recommend
ations of the College of Agricul
ture. Each demonstration will be
used to teach cotton growers re
commended production practices
for the respective area.
Sell said that the demonstra
tions are being sponsored by the
Cotton Producers Association and
Hercules Powder Company. The
Cotton Producers Association has
supplied each farmer with en
ough 4-12-12 or 5-10-15 fertilizer
and ammonium nitrate to meet
soil test recommendations for pro
ducing two bales of cotton per
acre.
The Hercules Powder Company
is supplying toxophene DDT, and
other insecticides needed for com
plete insect control. Liquid in
secticides are being used on all
the demonstrations to insure
better plant coverage under all
weather conditions, Sell explain
ed. A grant in aid to the Agri
cultural Extension Service for
conducting the insect control pro
gram is also being supplied by
Hercules Powder Company.
Sell said that a similar pro
gram was conducted during 1958
on more than 400 acres in 13
counties. An average yield of 952
pounds of lint cotton per acre was
obtained at a production cost of
approximately 25 cents per pound-
