How Much
Would "No-Advertising"
Cost Your Business?
* * ♦
Some businessmen look upon ad
vertising as an expense. When
expenses must be cut, the ad
vertising budget is first to
come under the knife.
The trouble with that, method
is—it just won’t work.
The fact overlooked is that
newspaper advertising repre
sents only a fractional part
of the cost of goods sold.
Advertising is the instrument
which brings the greatest returns
when it is intelligently planned.
Advertising becomes expensive
when you don't use enough.
It’s like failing to lubricate
a piece of valuable machinery.
You save the cost of lubri
cant, but eventually you have
to pay the big repair bill—
and production losses while the
machinery is idle.

Angina Pectoris a Symptom
That Should Not Be Ignored
By The
Medical Association
of Georgia
We’ve all heard people say they
have “angina." This sounds as
if they’re saying they have a
definite disease when, in fact, an
gina-which is the short way of
saying angina pectoris — is really
just a symptom.
It is, however, a symptom that
should not be ignored. It .may be
a warning of a serious underly
ing condition.
What is angina? The heart mus
cle is a very active muscle and
in order to do its work of pump
ing blood through the body, it
must have a continuous and ad
equate supply of oxygen from the
blood that nourishes it. Any con
dition that cuts down on the a
mount of blood being supplied the
heart or in the amount of oxygen
in that blood is likely to produce
angina, or pain in the chest. This
is due to an ache in the heart
muscle itself.
Angina usually occurs in per
sons over 40 years of age and
ultimate relief of the pain de
pends on correction of the un
derlying condition that causes it.
Various drugs, mainly nitrogly
cerine, are helpful in relieving
the pain during an attack, but
the pain is likely to recur if the
underlying cause persists.
The pain called angina may be
mild or excrutiating. Death may
come with the first attack or 25
years later. The pain is usually
located under the breast bone and
may rediate down either arm,
though it more often involves the
left arm. The pain may occur
repeatedly every day or only
when the patient exerts himself.
It is more likely to occur when
ne is up and about than when
ae is at rest, unless it has already
sen occuring quite frequently.
Angina may be experienced by
arsons with one of several dif
■rent heart conditions or other
rculatory disorders.
The encouraging thing about
ngina is that a person afflicted
’ith it may find that the attacks
re becoming less frequent and
lat they finally go away. This
imetimes happens because the

body has away of developing a
collateral circulation to supply
blood to areas being deprived of
it.
Thus when, for one reason or
another, the arteries that supply
some part of the heart muscle
with blood don’t work properly,
the body develops new branches
and enlarges old arteries so that
the blood-deprived areas will get
more blood. If enough of this sub
stitution takes place, the angina
attacks-during which the heart
muscle screams for more oxygen
carrying blood — subside. Pat
ients who have attacks of an
gina are advised to live quietly
in order to give the body a chance
to develop this collateral circul
ation.
Doc MAG says:
1. To avoid angina, reduce the
stress and strain in your life.
Keep your weight down. Steer
clear of unnecessary worry, hurry
and overindulgences. Learn to be
patient and quit driving yourself
to exhaustion. These same tips
should be followed by persons
who’ve already had an attack of
angina.
2. If you suffer angina, consult
your doctor. This pain may be a
sign of a serious underlying con
dition that needs immediate at
tention.
