2 Negro Youths
Drown in Satilla
Two Negro youths from Way
cross were drowned in the Satilla
river near the Blackshear-Way
cross Highway bridge on Monday
afternoon of this week.
The two, Emanuel E. Clark, 9,
and Frankie L. Cobb, 7, were
drowned when they climbed off
a sandhill into the five-foot-deep
channel about 100 feet from the
bridge on the Pierce county side
of the river.
Searchers recovered the bodies
of the youths approximately 30
minutes after a call for help came
from companions on the sandbar.
Witnesses, including the mother
of the Cobb boy, told officers
that the two youths waded into
water over their heads while
searching for a shoe thrown into
the river by .another child.
Taking part in the rescue were
the Ware county sheriff’s office,
county officers and more than 20
volunteers.
Artificial respiration was at
tempted, then the two boys were
rushed to Memorial Hospital in
Waycross where they were pro
nounced dead on arrival.
Be careful on the highways —
the life you save may be your
own.
