Press Group
Makes Tour of
State Hospital
A group of Georgia newspaper,
radio and television representa
tives .made a two-day tour of the
Milledgeville State Hospital on
Thursday and Friday, Jan. 7-8.
Dean Broome, editor of The
Blackshear Times, was one of
those making the tour.
Members of the group came
away very much impressed by
the need for improvements at the
state institution for the treatment
of the mentally ill. Overcrowded
conditions, lack of sufficient per
sonnel and the need for more
mpdern methods of treating pa
tients were the problems most
apparent.
The tour included talks of ex
planation by the new hospital
superintendent, Dr. I. H. Mac-
Kinnon, and other hospital doc
tors and personnel, and visits to
several wards. Culver Kidd and
Phillip Chandler, state repre
sentatives from Baldwin county,
and members of the legislative
mental health committee, assisted
in conducting, the tours.
The Milledgeville State Hospi
tal was built in 1842 with only
63 patients on hand when the
hospital opened. The present pa
tient population is over 12,000.
There are 2,222 persons on the
staff of the hospital.
Admissions are about 4,000 per
year, and there are annually a
bout 875 deaths at the hospital,
2.675 discharges and 2,200 fur
loughed patients.

GEORGIA LEGISLATURE
J96O.U^K
the year '
of Mpjfei
decision SHSm
Whatever happens—or doesn’t happen during
the 1960 Georgia General Assembly which
convenes January 11 —will be decisive!
One of the major issues will be the big segre
gation question which will concern the
Atlanta Board of Education’s desegregation
plan for city schools. Under federal court
order to end racial discrimination in the
schools, the Atlanta board has devised a plan
contingent on Georgia legislative approval
before going into effect. The plan will be
submitted to the legislature.
What will the legislature do, in face of Gov.
Ernest Vandiver’s opposition to any weaken
ing of the state’s segregation laws and in
view of the solid anti-integration stand of
this and past legislatures? This issue is of
great import.
Keep up with what will happen on the spot
with The Atlanta Journal and The Atlanta
Constitution. Their reporters will be on the
scene to bring you the fast-breaking news as
it happens.
