Political
Announcement
For State Senator
TO THE VOTERS OF
BRANTLEY COUNTY:
I wish to announce as a can
didate for the office of State
Senator from this county.
I moved to this county eight
years ago because I liked it here
and wanted to make my home in
the section of Georgia where my
forefathers were born and rear
ed. I am the fifth generation of
my family to live in Brantley
County.
Having been reared on the
farm, I know something of our
farm problems. Having taught
school, I know something of the
problems of our schools and edu
catin. Having been in the army
and overseas, I know a little a
bout the economics and other
matters of interest in the prob
lems that confront our people to
day.
If you see fit to elect me, I
shall represent you in the best
possible way, because I want this
county to be my home and if I
can help to make it a better place
in which to live, I shall be
pleased. Your vote and Influence
will be appreciated.

PESTICIDE SAFETY
MEASURES
Main causes of poisoning from
pesticides are storing them in an
unlocked room, keeping them in
soft drink bottles or other un
labled containers, and failing to
read and follow directions and
cautions on labels, according to

Sawlogs May Soon Be Bought
By Weight instead of Feet
Macon, July 27 — The ever-in
creasing practice of buying saw
logs by weight has brought a
bout a forestry project to estab

Governor Ernest Vandiver
made funds available for the
study through the Georgia Forest
Research Council. Members of
the Georgia Farm Bureau, head
ed by John Duncan, requested
that the study be initiated in an
effort to standardize sawlog
weights. The project is being
jointly conducted by the Re
seach Council, Georgia Forestry
Commission, and the Southeast
ern Forest Experiment Station.
The project involves weighing
and measuring logs at numerous
logging sites throughout Georgia.
The logs are being sampled until
sufficient data is obtained to de
termine if variations in weight
exist between different sections
of the state for the same species
and between species. Also, if lo
cal variations of soil moisture
conditions, such as high, well
drained ground versus low,
swampy ground, significantly in
fluences weight to volume ratio.
The logs are weighed and mea
sured at the site to determine the
percentages of sapwood and
heartwood, springwood and sum
merwood, the amount of log ta
per and bark thickness. Wood
samples are taken to the Forestry
Center at Macon for analysis of
jnoisture content and specific
gravity.
Buying logs by weight rather
than by volume has certain ad
vantages. It eliminates human er-
