M. M. Manor is
Nominated for
Fanner of Year
M. M. Manor, Route 1, Nahun
ta, Georgia, has been nominated
for Georgia Farmer of The Year
honors for 1960.
County Agent George A. Loyd
nominated Mr. Manor for the
honors from Brantley County.
Announcement of the state win
ner will be made in January.
Mr. Manor now operates 792
acres as a general farm. His to
bacco production per acre in the
past 15 years increased by 1250
pounds, and he has more than
quadrupled his corn production.
Our Home Demonstration Clubs, Our 4-H
Clubs and their Leaders!
This year has been a big year for bringing honors
to Brantley County. The Progressive attitudes of the
Home Demonstration Club women, 4-H Club boys
and girls and to their leaders, Mrs. Virginia N. Raul
erson, Home Demonstration Agent, and Mr. George
A. Loyd, County Agent.
There are eight 4-H Clubs in Brantley County with
486 members. There were 27 boys and girls repre
senting the county at District Project Achievement
with 14 blue awards and 13 red awards. About 25%
of the members participated in community contests.
They took first place in the Junior Booths at the
Okefenokee Agricultural Fair, also numerous prizes
in individual entries and livestock. The spirit of Mak
ing the Best Better applies four-fold to the boys and
girls in our county.
The six Home Demonstration Clubs can boast of
having the State President, artist who can make the
best name tags in Southeast Georgia, leader training
meetings where demonstrations are learned and car
ried back to fellow club members, five county dress
reviews, first place in adult booth at Okefenokee
Agricultural Fair, and giving an Honor Banquet
where 4-H and Home Demonstration Club members
were recognized for their outstanding achievements.
We believe the future for our county depends upon
the progressive attitudes of our people, and for this
progressive spirit shown in our County Home Demon
stration Club women, and 4-H Club members. We
congratulate you! We have the best ! !

Plarned Wiring ...
pipeline to farm profits
YOU CAN'T BEAT electricity for doing farm
jobs at low cost. Just ask J. R. Dunagan
DeKalb county dairyman.
His pipeline milking system milks a cow
twice a day for a month at a power cost of
four cents. With a herd of 55 Holsteins, he
puts electricity to work in many ways.
Mr. Dunagan planned ahead for plenty of
kilowatts. He and a Georgia Power Company
rural engineer designed a modern wiring
system for the farm.
For 33 years these engineers have helped
Georgia farmers. Throughout the state,
thousands* of rural customers served di
rectly by this company are using electricity
to increase production and to hold down
labor costs.

He also has added cattle and

Judging of the Georgia Farm

based 40 percent on progress in
agriculture, 35 percent on soil

practices and 25 percent on con

PLOW UNDER WEEDS
Plowing under weeds in the
fall can be a big help in prevent
ing weeds in the home garden
and in commercial vegetable
plantings next spring, according
to C. D. Spivey, Extension horti
culturist. The weeds need to be
plowed under before their seed
reach maturity so they won’t
germinate next spring when the
ground warms up.
WE HONOR
James Thomas is
Honored at Brewton
Parker College
From Brewton-Parker’s

“The orange and Blue’s “Boy

James (Jimmy) Thomas of Na

Jimmy, a business administra

Mrs. Cecil F. Thomas, pastor of
the Nahunta Baptist Church. Al
though Jimmy is active in his
home church, he participates in
the activities of the Mt. Vernon
Baptist Church, and recently
moved his membership there.
He is no stranger to the Brew
ton-Parker campus. He first at
tended Brewton-Parker in 1956-
57, but his studies were inter
rupted by the army, and he spent
18 months in France. He return

this year.
Jimmy’s fine personality and
many talents are exhibited
through his membership in vari

B. S. U., the choir, Mounted Ba

His most recent honor is his

WHY THE SCHOOLS NEED
MONEY — One reason the
schools need more money is that
every five and one-half minutes,
day in and day out, another baby
is born in Georgia — more than
100,000 each year. In the U.S. 7
are born each minute. In the
world, 11 are born every second!
(Barbara Ward, the British eco
nomist, said that by the year

they will be able to make food
out of anything they can bend
down and pick up, but the earth
may be so crowded that there’s
no room for a man to bend
down!)
ILLUSTRATION FOR A
STORY — It must have been a
perfectly wonderful experience
recently when little children who
gather in the golden autumn sun
shine by the lake in New York’s
Central Park to hear Saturday
morning stories had a real king
and queen to stop by and share
their hour. The children, fresh
faced and clean and shiny-eyed,
were listening to Victor Borge
read Hans Christian Anderson
stories. The children all wore
white gloves that special Satur
day in honor of Denmark’s King
Frederick and Queen Ingrid. But
in spite of having a real king
and queen to pop in on their
story hour, the children were
disappointed. The king and queen
did not have on crowns like the
kings and queen of the story
books!
