ELEMENTS NEEDED
FOR PLANT GROWTH
Sixteen known elements are
required for plant growth, ac
cording to P- J. Bergeaux, Ex
tension agronomist. Nitrogen,
phosphorus and potassium are the
major elements. Secondary ele
ments are calcium, magnesium
and sulfur. Elements known as
“trace elements” because they are
required in much smaller a
mounts are iron, manganese, cop
per, boron, zinc, molybdenum and
chlorine. The other three are car
bon, oxygen and hydrogen, which
are supplied either by the atmos
phere or from soil water.
Detailed statistics on crops,
livestock, equipment, etc., are
presented in the preliminary re
port, with comparable statistics
for 1954. Copies of the county re
port may be obtained for 10 cents
each from the Bureau of the Cen
sus, Washington 25, D. C.

Pine Seedling
Crop Delayed
MACON-Lifting and shipping
of the 1960-61 Georgia Forestry
Commission seedling crop has
been delayed until weather con
ditions permit, according to Com
mission Director Ray Shirley.
The exceptions are the Commis
sion’s Seventh and Ninth Dis
tricts where shipments will com
mence Nov. 21 to areas with suf
ficient soil moisture as determin
ed by the Commission.
Dry weather conditions, exist
ing throughout most of the State,
have necessitated the delay,
Shirley said. The Commission
director pointed out that planting
in dry ground, and leaving the
seedlings in bundles or heeled
in for a lengthy period
would decrease the chance of
maximum survival.
Shirley stated that the two
week delay in shipment will al
low the trees to become fully dor
mant which should increase the
percentage of survival over past
years.
Shirley added that landowners
can still place their orders for
the 239,000,000 seedlings produced
in the Commission’s six nurseries.
Blanks for ordering pine tree
seedlings are available through
the Forestry Commission’s county
rangers. ASC purchase orders
will be accepted as well as checks
and money orders. Approximately
70,000,000 seedlings are already
scheduled for shipment with ad
ditional orders being scheduled.
The Commission’s high quality
seedling crop includes certain
hardwood species. They are swa
mp chestnut oak, northern red
oak, sweet gum, sycamore, green
ash and yellow poplar. Softwood
species available are slash, lob
lolly, shortleaf and Virginia pi
ne, eastern red cedar and bald
cypress.
A transportation charge of 25
cents per thousand trees will be
made on tree delivery by truck
to the county units. There is no
limit on quantity. However, any
purchaser may pick up their
seedlings at the nursery location
if they desire. Shirley emphasized
that shipping facilities are ample
to speed the crop to landowners
once conditions are favorable for
lifting. This method of distribu
tion is being used to insure faster
and prompt service to the land
owners.
