No Spectacular Changes
In 1961 Business Seen
Business in 1961 will take its
cue from the present trend, with
no spectacular surges and no pro
longed downturn, according to
Changing Times, the Kiplinger
Magazine.
The current issue of the .maga
zine in its “Months Ahead,” a
regular monthly feature, pre
dicts that some lines will be more
sluggish than others, but there
will be no severe upsets. The ed
itors report that trends for the
early part of the year are set,
and from them can be read the
probably business mood for the
months to follow.
“Production will sag some in
the first few months of the year,
a trend that is seasonal and
partly a result of missing stim
ulants,” according to the column.

“Christmas business will zip
things up this month, of course.
It always puts a kick in year
end activity. But the zip won’t
last and the post-Christmas let
down may be a little more pain
ful than normal.”
The article notes that good
news for shoppers is the fact
that prices are under pressure
and competition is' feverish in
many areas. This is interpreted
to mean that January sales will
feature good buys. But the im
portant fact, noted for shoppers,
is that prices won’t bounce back
much—price levels will remain
fairly stable.
Capsuling all areas of business,
the editors foresee:
New products.
Many are likely to be intro
duced before the year is out —
in appliances, housewares and
even clothing.
Unemployment.
Currently up, but employment
also is high. The real concern,
according to the editors, is that
unemployment will go over the
6 percent mark next year. “The
paradoxical picture of high em
ployment at a time of rising em
ployment will be one of the
first problems to challenge the
new administration.”
Tax cuts.
None likely. Only a deepening
recession would produce a tax
cut.
Interest rates.
Have been dropping slightly in
recent months and will continue
to go down next year. “This me
ans easier financing for buyers
of new houses. It will also reduce
slightly the cost of financing new
cars and other installment pur
chases.”
“As of now, it looks as if the
worrisome slowdown in home
building will persist, despite
easier money." The article pre
dicts that businessmen will pull
back on plans for new factories,
offices and warehouses, but gov
ernment construction will expand
—a result of stepped-up spending
for defense and road building, a
calculated stimulant to ease re
cession blues in many areas of

TREAT COTTON SEED
Treating cotton seed used for

seed treating can pay dividends

Important Change
In Determination
Os Tobacco Acreage
An important change has been
made in the rules affecting the
determination of tobacco acre
ages, according to Harry Peacock,
chairman of the Pierce ASC
County Committee.
Effective with the 1961 crop,
alternate rows or strips skipped
between tobacco rows will not
be deducted and the total acre
age shall be considered as devot
ed to tobacco unless at least four
normal tobacco rows are skipped
between the rows or strips
planted to tobacco. Where four
or more normal rows are skip
ped between the tobacco rows
only the area actually devoted
to tobacco will be considered to
bacco acreage and there is no
requirement that another crop
be planted in such strips.
“Many farmers planted tobac
co and other crops in alternate
rows or strips of less than four
rows in 1960,” Mr. Peacock said,
“therefore, tobacco fanners are
urged to take special notice of
the change for 1961 and succeed
ing years,” the Chairman con
cluded.
The change with respect to in
tertilling does in no way affect
the special rule for sled rows in
flue-cured tobacco which re
quires that the skip for a sled
row be at least one normal row
wide and that there not be more
than one sled row for each four
normal rows of tobacco.
Mr. Peacock urged all tobacco
farmers to contact their commit
teemen or the ASC county office
if they have any questions con-
