Highway Accidents
Make Christmas
Tragic for Many
Christmas should be a time of
joy, but in too many cases it
is a time of tragedy because of
the unusually high number of
highway and other types of acci
dents, declares Willis E. Huston,
engineer for the University of
Georgia Agricultural Extension
Service.
That many accidents are attri
buted to holiday activities is
pointed up by statistics compiled
by the National Safety Council,
Mr. Huston says.
These figures show that more
than half — 55 percent —of fa
tal automobile accidents during
Christmas holidays involve drink
ing drivers. This compares with
an average of about 30 percent
year round.
Speed is another’ killer that
steps up its pace over the holi
days. Excessive speed is involv
ed in about 75 percent of fatal
highway accidents over the holi
days, compared with about 38
percent of the year round aver
age.
The flowing bowl at the
Christmas office party is respon
sible for many of these fatal acci
dents, the Safety Council has
found. Persons hurraying to get
home in time for Christmas are
a prominent cause for the acci
dents attributable to excessive
speed, Mr. Huston says.
Christmas Eve, which is usual
ly thought of as the happiest
time of the holidays, is also the
most dangerous. The period from
6:00 P. M. to midnight is the
worst. During these hours the
average number of deaths from
highway accidents jumps to 12
an hour, compared to an average
of less than five an hour during
the next 24 hour period, he points
out.
“Take a little extra care when
driving during the holidays so
that you won’t cause the happy
holidays to turn into tragic ones
for your or someone else’s fami
ly,” Mr. Huston says.
He urges everyone to keep in
mind the theme of this year’s
safety campaign by the Council:
“Keep Christmas In Your Driv
ing.”
