Sells Farm Owner
On Soil Testing
M rs . W. B. Martin, a farm
owner in the Cedar Springs Com
munity of Early County, is firm
ly convinced that soil testing pays
off in producing peanuts, says
p J. Bergeaux, Extension agro
nomist of the University of
Georgia College of Agriculture.
A year ago, however, she wasn’t
so sure.
Her son, Bob Martin, a student
at Abraham Baldwin College,
convinced her that she should
soil test at least one peanut field
and following the resulting lime
and fertilizer recommendations.
She followed his advice and
took a soil sample from one ten
acre peanut field and sent it to
the Coastal Plain Experiment
Station for analysis. Mrs. Martin
followed the recommendations
which called for one ton of lime
and 400 pounds of 5-10-15 ferti
lizer per acre.
Harvest time showed the dif
ference. On the ten-acre field
limed and fertilized according to
soil test recommendations, the
yield was one ton of peanuts per
acre. This was almost twice the
yield of the rest of Mrs. Martin’s
peanut fields.
Mrs. Martin works closely with
County Agent Judson Cooper.

Mrs - Martin is now convinced
that soil testing is the only in
telligent way to determine lime
and fertilizer needs of a parti
cular farm field. She intends to
nave all of her peanut fields

through on the lime and fertili

year’s crop, Mr. Bergeaux says.
PICTURE WINDOWS
need nice view
The picture window was de
signed to overlook a garden
scene or some other pleasant
view, and not to be placed to
ward a busy street where the
passing traffic looks in on the
family, says Extension Land
scape Specialist T. G. Williams
at the University of Georgia. If
there is no ready-made view be
fore a picture window, attempt
to make the area outside the
glass more attractive by planting
flowering trees and an evergreen
border, with annuals and peren
nials in front. A focal point of
the garden such as a pool, speci
men plant or seat can be put in
to the picture that is seen
through the glass.

Celebrations of
Christinas Once
Were Outlawed
Christmas celebrations become
so merry in Merrie Old England
that they were abolished.
World Book Encyclopedia notes
that the Puritans prohibited the
boisterous observances in the
1640’5. They threw out ministers
who dared to hold services on
Christmas Day and jailed any
one who didn’t treat December 25
as a common work day.
But while the Puritans were
taking over England under
Oliver Cromwell, they were los
ing the battle of Christmas. Riots
broke out in 1647 protesting the
ban on the holiday. And an out
raged group of 10,000 men pass
ed a resolution declaring that if
they couldn’t celebrate Christ
mas, they’d just as soon have the
king back.
A few years later, the Puritans
prudently beheaded King Charles
I. But the English people invit

back in 1660 and Christmas, as
well as the monarchy, was re-
