SP<Me TO GEORGIA COUNT IE S Greene County, formed from 404 square miles of Washington County lands in 1786, became Georgia's 11th county. It was named for Revolutionary War General Nathaniel Greene. Until 1802, Greene County served as a buffer between the settled East and the Western frontier. Greensboro, the county seat, marks the site of the first in a chain of forts built for pro tecting settlers from Creek Indian invasions. The University of Georgia was planned as a Greensboro institution, but was finally established at Athens in 1832. The predecessor of Mercer University was founded in Penfield in 1833, where it remained for 38 years before being moved to Macon.
