OKEFENOKEE SWAMP PARK, Waycross, Georgia —Billy’s
Lake in the Okefenokee Swamp was named for the Seminole Indian
chief, who made his last stand there against the Federal soldiers.
Okefenokee Swamp the ‘‘Land of Trembling Earth,” so called by the
redman because of the quaking nature of its soil. It is the largest pre
served fresh-water swampland in the United States. This geological
phenomenon of Georgia Coastal Plain was once a mud-cup in the ocean’s
floor, product of an ancient sea. Georgia Department of Commerce

In the last five years, Dr.
Walker said, more than $1,000,000
has been given in scholarships
to Methodist students.
The scholarships and loans are
open to Methodist students re
gardless of their vocational
choice, he said.
Though the annual special of
fering has increased over the
years, it has not kept pace with
stepped-up college enrollments
and the mounting cost of attend
ing college, Dr. Walker empha
sized.
The funds are administered by
the Methodist General Board of
Education, which has its national
headquarters in Nashville.
The average classroom teacher
salary in Georgia in 1959-60 was
$3,802: National average was $4,-
995.
